August Sach
Hans Christian August Sach (born January 29, 1837 in Kesdorf ; † December 27, 1929 in Lübeck ) was a German high school teacher and historian.
Live and act
August Sach was a son of the farmer Hans Joachim Sach (born September 9, 1800 in Zarnekau ; † April 28, 1852 ibid) and his wife Anna Dorothea Elise , née Gloy (born February 1, 1808 in Kesdorf; † April 5, 1875 in Röbel ). His mother was a daughter of the Kesdorf farmer Dietrich Gloy and his wife Juliane Catharina Dorothea, née Japp. The father's ancestors were farmers who, according to the family's tradition, moved from the Netherlands to Ostholstein in 1150. The family was first documented in 1549 in Zarnekau.
Since Sach had older brothers, he was not intended to be the heir to his father's court. Therefore he attended the Eutin School of Academics until his Abitur in 1857 . On November 2, 1857, he enrolled at the University of Kiel to study philology. Here he heard from Heinrich Moritz Chalybäus , Peter Wilhelm Forchhammer , Georg Curtius and Karl Wilhelm Nitzsch . In 1858 he continued his studies in Bonn, where he joined the scientific student association "Bonner Kreis". His teachers here were in particular Friedrich Ritschl , Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker , Friedrich Christoph Dahlmann and Heinrich Sybel . In 1860 he moved to Berlin and attended lectures by August Böckh and Johann Gustav Droysen . In the summer semester of 1861 he went to Kiel again. In his dissertation he dealt with the "Quaestiones Ovidianae" by Ovid . Thus he also had the license to teach in higher schools.
From Easter 1862 to Christmas 1863, Sach worked as a private tutor to Baron Karl von Freytag-Loringhoven, who lived as the Russian consul general in Copenhagen . From 1864 to 1889 he taught at the cathedral school in Schleswig , where he initially taught German, history and Latin, then history and Danish. In 1887 he was appointed senior teacher and professor the following year. In 1889 he moved to the Johanneum grammar school in Hadersleben as vice-principal, where he stayed until his retirement in 1906. Why he switched to a smaller school is unclear. After working, he lived in Kiel.
In 1906 Sach received the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class.
Working as a historian
While teaching, Sach worked as a librarian in the Schleswig school library. When he left it had 15,000 volumes. From 1879 to 1889 he was a member of the board of the "Association for the Collection and Conservation of Patriotic Antiquities". He created his significant work as part of his more than 50 years of research on the history of Schleswig-Holstein and the art, the Gottorf Castle , Hans Brüggemann , the rectors of the Schleswig Cathedral School, Joachim Rachel , Asmus Carstens as well as the beginnings and the town charter of Hadersleben.
Sach wrote three works of particular note:
- “The schola trivialis seu particularis and the paedagogium publicum in Schleswig during the 16th century” appeared in print in 1873 in the Schleswig Cathedral School. In it, he investigated, based on sources, the attempts to create new educational institutions in the Gottorfer Hof area during the reign of Adolf von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf .
- In 1875 the "History of the City of Schleswig according to documented sources" appeared. It was the first scientifically based description of the city's history. It is still considered standard literature today.
- From 1896 to 1906 Sach produced three volumes on "The Duchy of Schleswig in its ethnographic and national development". In it he described the history of the area and gave a comprehensive overview of the development and establishment of High and Low Danish and German. Since Sach wrote during the time of the conflicts between Danes and Germans, he classified the Jutes living there as an independent tribe to be distinguished from the Danes. Thus claims of the Danes based on the ethnic group could be rejected.
Sach also gave lectures and worked on school books.
