Joachim Rachel (satirist)

Joachim Rachel (born February 28, 1618 in Lunden in Dithmarschen , † May 3, 1669 in Schleswig ) was a German satirist , called the German Juvenal .

Life

Rachel comes from a Mecklenburg pastor family based in Dithmarschen. His father Mauritius Rachel was a pastor in Lunden. His brother Samuel Rachel was an eminent lawyer.

From 1635 to 1637 he attended the Johanneum in Hamburg before enrolling at the University of Rostock . Here he studied philology under Peter Lauremberg until he hired himself as a court master in Dorpat in 1640 . In 1652 he became school principal in Heide , and in 1660 he took over the same position at the Ulrichsgymnasium in Norden . In 1667 he accepted an appointment as rector of the cathedral school in Schleswig , in which office he died two years later.
