August Vogel (born August 4, 1817 in Munich , † August 14, 1889 in Rosenheim ) was Professor of Agricultural Chemistry at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

The son of the chemist Heinrich August von Vogel graduated from the (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich in 1835 and then studied medicine at the universities in Munich, Göttingen and Berlin . 1839 in Munich as Dr. med. after receiving his doctorate , he then turned to Giessen out of a passion for chemistry , to hear from Justus von Liebig and to work in his laboratory. Here he mainly dealt with agricultural chemistry. After a year he went back to Munich to work as an adjunct in the university's chemical laboratory under the direction of his father. In the following year he was able to work as a lecturer , initially holding lectures on analytical and organic chemistry on behalf of his father , but then also taking on teaching tasks in the field of agricultural chemistry. In 1848 he was employed as an associate professor at the philosophical faculty after the faculty in Erlangen made him Dr. phil. PhD. From now on he limited his teaching activities to agricultural chemistry and supplemented this with agricultural-technical exercises and studies. His work "About the absorption of silica by vegetables" was awarded a prize in 1866 by the Academy of Sciences in Munich. Appointed full professor for agricultural chemistry in 1869, Vogel also endeavored to contribute to the dissemination of scientific knowledge, in particular to the popularization of Liebig's teachings, outside of the university through journal articles. In 1870 he was accepted as a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . Widowed and ailing since the mid-1880s, he moved to live with his son in Rosenheim, where he died on August 14, 1889.

The pediatrician Alfred Vogel was his brother.
