Kolb had first successes in 1893 when he and his teacher Franz Wilhelm Driesler (1854–1910) painted the parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Sächsenheim. He committed himself to church monumental art around 1920, on the occasion when he was painting the Church of St. Cyriak in Oberkirch . Augustin Kolb was influenced, among other things, by the so-called Beuron art school . He had this in common with many Church Expressionists from the interwar period. The Beuron art school is seen as a transition from classical to modern painting.

After studying in Munich, Kolb painted for a long time in the Offenburg area . In 1927 he moved to Cologne and then to Kassel . Towards the end of his life, around 1940, he then went back to his home village Güntersleben.

Most of Kolb's works, such as the painting of the Recklinghausen Church of Our Lady from 1923, have not survived. However, the complete painting of the St. Johannes Church (Taunus Cathedral) in the Bad Homburg district of Kirdorf has been preserved . In 1995 Kolb's paintings were uncovered again in the Trinity Church in Offenburg. There is also an approximately 200 m² ceiling painting depicting the Ascension of Christ in the Mauritius Church in Ibbenbüren .
