Augustine Novellus
Augustine Novellus (* around 1240 in Tarano or Termini Imerese , † May 19, 1309 in San Leonardo al Lago , today Monteriggioni near Siena ) was an Augustinian hermit and chancellor of King Manfred of Sicily .
Life
Augustinus Novellus (also Agostino Novello , actually Matteo di Termini , also known as Panormitano or Agostino da Tarano ) came from Termini Imerese or Tarano. He studied law in Bologna and then became Chancellor of Manfred , King of Sicily. After his death in the battle of Benevento in February 1266, he turned to a religious life and took the name Augustine (after Augustine of Hippo ). In 1266 he was accepted into the order of the Augustinian Hermits and was their general from 1298 to 1300 . He then retired to the monastery of San Leonardo al Lago near Siena and worked in Siena on the expansion of Santa Maria della Scala and its statutes from 1305. His beatification took place under Pope Clement XIII. on July 11, 1759, Clement XIV confirmed the cult on July 23, 1770. The blessed was first buried in Sant'Agostino in Siena. On May 19, 1977 he was reburied in Termini Imerese in the Cathedral of San Nicola di Bari.
