Augusto Cancela de Abreu

Augusto Cancela de Abreu (born August 14, 1895 in Arcos , Anadia , Aveiro district ; † April 26, 1965 ) was a Portuguese politician of the National Union UN (União Nacional) , who was among other things Minister for Public Works and Communication between 1944 and 1947 and was then Minister of the Interior from 1947 to 1950.

Life

After attending school, Abrau completed a degree in civil engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon and then worked as deputy director and director of Linha de Cascais , the railway line between Lisbon and Cascais operated by the Sociedade de Estoril . Subsequently, he was Administrative Director of the Railway Company (Caminhos-de-ferro) of Beira Alta and Administrative Director of the National Society of Spinning and Weaving Mills (Companhia Nacional de Fiação e Tecidos) of Torres Novas . He joined the National Union UN (União Nacional) founded on July 30, 1930 , the unity party of the Portuguese Estado-Novo initiated by António de Oliveira Salazar and was at times spokesman for their district association of Lisbon. Between 1932 and 1934 he was head of cabinet in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Agriculture and the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

In 1935 Abreu was elected a member of the National Assembly ( Assembleia Nacional ) for the first time and belonged to it in the first and second legislative periods until 1942. On September 6, 1944, Prime Minister António de Oliveira Salazar appointed him Minister of Public Works and Communications (Ministro das Obras Públicas e Comunicações) and held this post until February 4, 1947 February 1947 and August 2, 1950 the office of Minister of the Interior (Ministro do Interior) . In 1953 he was again a member of the Assembleia Nacional and until 1957 represented the constituency of Santarém . During this sixth legislative period, he was vice-chairman of the economic committee.

After leaving Parliament, Abreu was President of the Executive Commission of the National Union between 1957 and 1961. He was also temporarily legal advisor to the Câmara Corporativa , the lower house of the Assembleia Nacional , and a member of the Council of State (Conselho de Estado) .

Abreu has received several awards and received, among other things, on October 5, 1934 the dignity of the Military Order of Christ (Ordem Militar de Cristo) , on July 6, 1935 as the Commander of the Order for Merit in Agriculture and Commerce (Ordem Civil do Mérito Agrícola e Industrial ) and on April 13, 1949 the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Christ.
