Augusto Zampini-Davies

Augusto Zampini-Davies (born July 25, 1969 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine Roman Catholic priest and social ethicist. Since 2020 he has been Assistant Secretary of the Dicastery for Holistic Human Development in the Vatican.

Life

Augusto Zampini first attended St. Brendan's College (1975–1986) and studied law at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina (1987–1993). From 1993 to 1997 he worked as a lawyer for various national and international banks in Argentina and as a lawyer specializing in mergers and acquisitions at the major law firm Baker McKenzie .

From 1997 to 2004 he studied philosophy and theology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina and was ordained a priest in 2004. He was a chaplain in various parishes and institutions in Argentina, many of which were in the poorest areas of the greater Buenos Aires area. From 2004 to 2006, he completed a master's degree in moral theology at the Universidad del Salvador . He completed a master's degree in international development (2009-2010) at the University of Bath in the UK and a PhD in theology with a focus on social ethics (2010-2014) from Roehampton University in London . He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology at the University of Cambridge (2013–2014).

From 2006 onwards, Zampini taught theology, Christian ethics and human rights at various universities in Argentina and Great Britain. He was a lecturer in fundamental theology, virtue ethics, family and sexual ethics at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina (2006–2008) and a lecturer at the Universidad del Salvador for social and fundamental theology (2007–2008). He was an Honorary Fellow at Durham University (2015–2018) and Roehampton University. His research area is social ethics. Together with Pope Francis, he has published numerous articles on Catholic social teaching and social Catholicism in general.

From 2010 to 2017 he was theological advisor at Catholic international development charity (CAFOD) for England and Wales with a focus on law, Christian ecology and social teaching. Augusto Zampini served as a priest in the Holy Apostles parish in the Archdiocese of Westminster (2014-2017) and was ad hoc adviser to Cardinal Vincent Nichols , Archbishop of Westminster and chairman of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales , on environmental issues. He is a member of various organizations such as the Digby Stuart Research Center for Religion, Society and Human Flourishing at Roehampton University, the Association of Teachers in Moral Theology of Great Britain , the Catholic Theological Association of Great Britain and the European Society of Catholic Theology as well as the Sociedad Argentina de Teología .

Zampini is an expert in business and environmental ethics. In 2018 he was invited to the Amazon Synod by Pope Francis . Since 2017 he has been head of the Vatican Dicastery for Holistic Human Development for the Department of Development and Faith, which deals with economic and financial issues, labor and social movements, indigenous peoples and peace.

On April 8, 2020, Pope Francis appointed Zampini alongside Secretary Bruno Marie Duffé as Assistant Secretary for the Development Dicastery, which is headed by Cardinal Peter Turkson .
