The Jarník lookout tower is a 59.5 meter high lattice tower built in 1997 two kilometers east of Písek on the Jarník mountain at a height of 606  m nm , which serves as a transmission tower for mobile communications and as an observation tower. A staircase with 182 steps leads to the viewing platform at a height of 34.6 meters.

history

Efforts to build a lookout tower on the mountain top go back to the end of the 18th century without any effort being made to realize it. The Czech Tourists Club was founded in Písek in 1901, and the following year they started looking for a suitable place to build a lookout tower with a view of Písek. The top of Jarník has just been chosen as the ideal location. However, the tall trees made it necessary to build a tower at least 28 meters high, which exceeded the financial resources of the association at the time. The association and the city administration therefore participated in the construction of a simple wooden construction, which is about one kilometer from the current position of the observation tower. From 1904 to 1918 there was a wooden fire watch tower not far from the summit , which was also used by hikers to look out over the landscape.

The current structure was not erected until 1997, when the then mobile radio operator Eurotel , the local radio station Rádio Prácheň and the town of Písek jointly built a steel structure that serves both as a lookout tower and as a transmission tower for mobile radio and radio signals. The structure was put into operation on October 9, 1997. The construction costs amounted to 17 million Czech crowns .
