The Okres Písek (Pisek District) is a district in Jihočeský kraj in the Czech Republic .
Numerous archaeological finds testify to the presence of humans as early as the Middle Stone Age . You can find settlements of Celts and Slavs , although most of the district was not settled until the 14th century.
The slightly hilly landscape shapes the face of the region with the highest mountain Kozlov (708 meters). On 1,127 km² there are many coniferous forests and large areas of water (4.6% of the area). The largest river is the Vltava and its tributary, the Otava , which flows into the Vltava under the Zvíkov Castle . The Orlík Dam plays an important role, especially for recreation . 70 thousand people live in 75 municipalities, 67% of them in the 5 cities ( Písek , Milevsko , Protivín , Mirotice , Mirovice ).
In the district there are mainly the following branches of industry: mechanical engineering, textile industry, electrical engineering, wood and metal processing. Animal husbandry (cattle, pigs, poultry) and grain cultivation also play an important role.
Tourism also plays an important role. In addition to many international festivals (South Bohemian Music Festival, Nocturne in Písek, International Film Festival, Small Theater Festival, International Folklore Festival, International Festival of Student Films and others) there is also the opportunity to discover nature on many cycling and hiking trails, but also on the water .
