The top stone is 417 m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Hunsrück , where it drops steeply as the southeastern Rheinhunsrück into the Upper Middle Rhine Valley near St. Goar . It rises to the east of Urbar and north of Niederburg , both of which are local parishes of the Sankt Goar-Oberwesel community in the Rhein-Hunsrück district .

On the top there are remains of a telegraph station that was built here at the end of the 18th century. It was part of a 700 km long telegraph line between Berlin and Trier , which consisted of a total of 61 stations. In addition, a 21 m high observation tower made of Douglas fir was built in 2003 . It was freely accessible and offered a comprehensive overview. In autumn 2015 the tower was closed due to fungus infestation; it was demolished in April 2018. In 2020, a new steel observation tower was completed with a replica of a wing telegraph at the top. The opening of the tower has been delayed due to the corona pandemic .
