Axis was an English new wave of British heavy metal band from Cleveland that was formed in 1978 and disbanded in 1982.

history

The band was formed in 1978 and consisted of singer Neil Grafton, guitarists Mick Tucker and Dave Little, bassist John Cunningham, keyboardist Paul McGuire and drummer Marty Day. In 1980 the single Lady appeared with the song Messiah as B-side, which was the first release of the Neat Records sub -label Metal Minded . Messiah was later to be heard on the Neat Records sampler Lead Weight 1981. The single was recorded at Impulse Studios by Neat Records. A little later, the band worked on two more songs called You Got It and One Step Ahead . The publication was planned for the end of 1981. However, this time it should happen directly at Neat Records, as Metal Minded had been closed again after the release of only two singles. Although the sound carrier had already been given the catalog number "Neat13", it was never released. Instead, Venom's Bloodlust took this place . The line-up changed several times, while the song Flame Burns On was heard on the Neat Records samplers 60 Minutes Plus (1982) and All Hell Is Loose (1983), which was only released in Europe . At that time, singer Sam Blewitt and former white spirit bassist Phil Brady were new members of the line-up. In addition, the keyboardist Paul McGuire had left the band. Since the band was hardly successful even with a new line-up, it came to an end in the second half of 1982. The members then devoted themselves to other musical projects such as Samson , White Spirit and Tank . In 2011, the compilation Flame Burns On was released by the music label High Roller Records , which has brought similar releases to the market by similar bands such as Metal Mirror or Jaguar .

style

Malc Macmillan described the music of the single in The NWOBHM Encyclopedia as interesting music of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, which is held at medium speed and has technically demanding and progressive traits. The music is a mixture of White Spirit, Chemical Alice and Marquis de Sade. Flame Burns On has lost its progressive character and offers simpler melodic rock . The single sounds, according to Eduardo Rivadavia from Allmusic , like music by Judas Priest that has been enriched by synthesizers . Rivadavia also noticed that Flame Burns On was significantly simpler than the previous single. Matthias Mader described in NWoBHM New Wave of British Heavy Metal The glory Days the music of the single as "[s] very interesting, spherical metal ", which sounds influenced by Rush and Hawkwind . According to The International Encyclopedia of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal by Tony Jasper and Derek Oliver, the band combines typical Rush song texts with good and powerful British heavy metal on the single .
