The bearded hornwort ( Cerastium brachypetalum ), also called small-flowered hornwort , is a species of the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae).

description

The indument is easy to see
blossom
Fruit: the sepals are clearly surmounted by glandless hair.
Open flower: the petals are ciliate at the base, the stamens are hairy.
The flower stalks are covered with protruding or slightly upward, often glandular hair.

The bearded hornwort grows as a one to two year old herbaceous plant and reaches heights of about 5 to 30 cm. The above-ground parts of the plant are gray-green in color. The trichomes are gray and quite long. The whole plant can also be hairy glandular. The opposite leaves are oblong-egg-shaped, the lower ones narrowed into the petiole.

The bearded hornwort blooms mainly from April to June. The inflorescence is loose, only the uppermost branches are close together. All bracts are herbaceous and without a skin border. They are particularly hairy at the tip. The crown is white and shorter to at most as long as the calyx. The stamens are hairy.

The elongated, cylindrical capsule fruit pops up with ten teeth. The fruit stalk is about two to three times as long as the calyx.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 52, 72 or 90, also 76.

Occurrence

Cerastium brachypetalum occurs from southern Scandinavia to southern Europe and to the east to Russia , Asia Minor and the Caucasus . It can also be found in North Africa .

In Austria it occurs sparsely to rarely and in Switzerland sparsely. In Germany the bearded hornwort is found absent-mindedly or rarely, especially in the southern part of Germany. It's rare in the north.

The bearded hornwort grows gregariously in gappy dry grass , on paths, embankments and cracks in the ground. It prefers dry, warm, moderately nutritious, calcareous loam or loess soils . In Central Europe it is a character species of Cerastietum pumili from the Alysso-Sedion association, but also occurs in societies of the Thero-Airion association.
