Béla Kovács (composer)

Béla Kovács (born May 1, 1937 in Tatabánya ) is a Hungarian clarinetist and composer .

Life

At the age of nine, Béla Kovács first took piano lessons and later clarinet at the music school in Tatabánya. In 1951 he began his studies at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest . In 1956 he was engaged as principal clarinetist at the Hungarian State Opera and at the National Philharmonic in Budapest. Since 1975 Kovács has been professor of clarinet at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest and since 1989 he has taught clarinet at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz , since 2009 he has been professor emeritus there . In 2004 he was a visiting professor at the Conservatory of Udine .

Béla Kovács received various awards for his work, including the Franz Liszt Prize in 1964 and the Kossuth Prize in 1988 . Béla Kovács has been an honorary member of the International Clarinet Association (ICA) since 2011 .
