Video design
Video design or projection design is a field of performing arts that is found in more and more areas of public life. Video design deals with the integration of film , photography , animation and graphic design into the field of drama and opera performances , concerts , musicals , choreographies , performances , films and events . Video design has only recently established itself in a broader form with the development of video technology and video projector technology . Before this new branch was created, set designers or lighting designers were also responsible for this trade. People working in this field are usually referred to as video designers. However, there are also various other terms, including projection designer, video artist, media designer, video director or simply video. Video design represents a new genre in the field of stage art, so that video designers define their own techniques, processes and rules.
history
Film and video content were incorporated into stage plays very early on. The Pani company developed the first stage-suitable equipment with a projection apparatus that contained a disc that could be painted on. The stage director Erwin Piscator , who ran the Volksbühne in Berlin in the 1920s, often used projections in his sets. After the development of digital technology made enormous strides at the end of the 80s, digital projectors came onto the market for the first time and gradually became affordable. The role of the video designer has evolved with technology and programs. With video design one tries to meet the desire for extended technical possibilities that projections can offer.
Job description of a video designer
Depending on the piece and taking into account the various ways in which a leading team (direction, stage design, lighting design, video design, costumes) works together on a piece, the role of the video designer varies from piece to piece. Video design is divided into the following areas:
- Creation of a video concept for the play, in cooperation with the other members of the production, to ensure that the event is consistent, i.e. H. is from a "cast"
- Creation of video content via 2D - and 3D - animation , graphical design, stop-motion technique , illustrating, films or other methods of film technology
- Directing, lighting, and camera the film clips that are created for a play
- Creation of a technical plan including the rigging to get the video onto the stage, including the selection of the media server, the cable routes and ultimately the projectors, LED walls or televisions and their integration, whereby high stability and reliability must be guaranteed
This is a wide area, so it is not uncommon for video designers to work in teams or with partners or assistants who do individual tasks. As an example: A video designer takes over the concept of a piece and animates content, another video designer then programs the media server, another creates 3D content.
education
In Germany you cannot yet learn how to work as a video designer in a degree. Most video designers are self-taught and career changers (e.g. architects, filmmakers, set designers or even former lighting designers).
