Philip Bussmann
Philip Bußmann (born August 23, 1969 in Hanau ) is a German set designer , video artist , photographer and director .
Life
Philip Bußmann studied stage and costume design with Professor Jürgen Rose at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart . After graduating, he moved to New York . He has lived in Frankfurt am Main since 2002 .
Create
In New York, Bußmann worked for eight years as a video and graphic designer for the experimental independent theater group The Wooster Group . His stage video for House / Lights won a Bessie Award. During his time in the USA, he began working in Germany: with Nicolas Stehmann at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg , William Forsythe for the Ballet Frankfurt and Matthias Hartmann at the Schauspielhaus Bochum .
After his return to Germany in 2002, he created further works with Matthias Hartmann and William Forsythe as well as projects with Sasha Waltz , Jean Jourdheuil, Peter Konwitschny , Hans-Werner Kroesinger and Luk Perceval.Since then, he has worked with Forsythe and Perceval for many years.
In 2004 Bußmann founded his own theater group together with the dancer Christopher Roman. Since then, he has been co-directing with the dramaturge Célestine Hennermann under the name 2+ theater projects and installations.
In the following years he worked with Jarg Pataki , Richard Siegal, Ludger Engels , Diane Paulus, Sebastian Baumgarten , Ron Daniels and Sandra Strunz, among others .
Bußmann has been a lecturer at the Academy for Performing Arts in Baden-Württemberg since 2010 . In the 2015 summer semester he was visiting professor at the Institute for Applied Theater Studies at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen .
In recent years, in addition to his theater work, Bußmann has increasingly devoted himself to his own installations, photo works and performance projects. His first institutional solo exhibition with extensive video installations and large-format photographic works was shown at the Ursula Blickle Foundation in autumn 2012. It was called Pixelmondo and was curated by Mario Kramer .
The video installation City of Abstracts by William Forsythe, for which Bußmann developed the video software, has been in the turbine hall of the Tate Modern London , the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich , the Nam Jun Paik Art Center Seoul, the Museum für Moderne , among others Kunst Frankfurt and the ICA Boston as well as 2019 in the Museum Folkwang Essen , the SESC Pompeia São Paulo , in the Upper Austrian Kulturquartier Linz and in the Museum of Fine Arts Houston .
In autumn 2015, Bußmann spent three months in Kyoto in the artist residence Villa Kamogawa of the Goethe Institute . During his stay in Japan he dealt with the geisha culture and its roots in traditional Japanese kabuki theater.
Most recently, further work as a video designer and set designer with Luk Perceval, Ulrich Rasche and Anselm Weber was created .
In 2019, three productions were nominated for the Berlin Theatertreffen, in which Bußmann was involved: For Courage and Grace (director: Luk Perceval) he designed the stage design, for Die Perser and Das große Heft (both times directed by Ulrich Rasche) he designed the stage video . The latter was included in the selection of 10 and was invited to Berlin.
