Baccano! ( Japanese バ ッ カ ー ノ Bakkāno ) is a light novel serieswrittenby Ryōgo Narita andillustratedby Katsumi Enami . The first edition of Baccano! - The Rolling Bootlegs wasawarded goldas part of the 9th Great Dengeki Game 3 Prize (電 撃 ゲ ー ム 3 大 賞 , today: Great Dengeki Novel Prize).

An adaptation as Anime - television series was created by the Studio Brain's Base animated and Aniplex published. Further adaptations followed in the form of mangas and video games .

Conception

Thematically, much of the action takes place in the 1930s at the time of Prohibition and the beginning of the Great Depression after the 1929 stock market crash in the United States . Large parts of the city are in the power of criminal organizations that are involved in small wars and assassinations.

The plot itself is discussed in a conversation between the Deputy Chief of Daily Days and young Carol. The girl tries to commit herself to Firo as the charismatic protagonist , but is promptly asked by her strict companion not only to concentrate on parts of the events, but to look at them as a whole. This results in a wild narrative structure that often changes between places and times without announcing it beforehand. It is up to the viewer himself to put the individual pieces of the plot together into a whole.

Individual scenes are repeated over and over again in order to view the same events from a different perspective that reveals more about the context. In one scene, for example, Jacuzzi Splot is followed, who is so scared by Isaac Dian's story about the "Rail Tracer" that he runs in panic from the dining car of the Flying Pussyfoot train towards the driver's cab. On the way, he collides with Ladd Russo, who is stepping out of the cabin, and continues to run after apologizing. In a different shot, Ladd is first shown together with Lua Klein, where he learns from one of his devotees who is already on the way to the dining car to arrange a bloodbath. In the end, he can't take it anymore, tormented by not being able to be there. Lustful he steps outside the door and is jostled by Jacuzzi. Viewed from another perspective, Jacuzzi's friend Nice Holystone is followed, who meets the other members of the gang outside the dining car and stops Nick to immobilize the dining car. The action itself does not change, but the viewer learns more and more about the background of the individual actions and their interaction.

While the prehistory is only explained in retrospect within the main storyline, the storyline itself has been packed within a framework that results from a conversation between Gustave St. Germain and the young Carol. In this, Carol's deputy director can report on the events and their connections, which results in a non-linear main story with many jumps between places, times and viewing angles.

action

prehistory

On a pirate ship in 1711, a group of alchemists carried out experiments to achieve immortality . Maiza Avaro and his younger brother manage to summon a demon . The demon Hans agrees to give them an ether of immortality. In addition, he reveals the recipe for this ether to the two summons.

Since immortality can also mean endless torture (e.g. imprisonment), the demon reveals the only way to end their lives to all alchemists involved. To do this, they have to be “eaten” by another immortal. The "eater" automatically gains his knowledge.

Despite this knowledge and the warnings of the demon, all consent to drink the elixir and thus achieve immortality. They are still vulnerable as a result, feel pain, but their bodies magically restore themselves. At the same time, the aging process continues.

The following night, Szilard Quates, one of the alchemists, “eats” many of the immortals to get the recipe. The demon had previously only entrusted this to Maiza, who in turn shared half of the secret with his brother. After Szilard managed to kill his brother and get part of the recipe, Szilard finally fell overboard during a fight. Knowing that they can be mutually dangerous, the surviving “immortals” decide to go their separate ways.

Main storyline

In 1930 Isaac and Miria tried to find gold in a mine in California and lost almost a full year. Both get a letter from Ennis asking them to meet her in New York. Ennis admits that Isaac and Miria awakened her from being a homunculus. Believing they are representatives of the law, they both attack a mafia money transport in the form of two baseball players. In November, according to Charol, the special events begin.

In 1931 a bookstore was robbed in Manhattan, targeting Firo and Luck, both of whom are already immortal. Firo captures one of the attackers. At the same time, the Flying Pussyfoot train runs from Chicago to New York. They get in: The crazy thieves, Vino in the clothes of a conductor, supporters of Huey Laforet (black, disguised as a music orchestra), murderous members of the Russo family (white, one of them kills the retired train driver), Jacuzzi Splot and his friends, employees of the Daily Days (disguised as the bartender and passenger Rachel ) and Czeslaw Meyer as the company of the wife and daughter of Senator Beriam. In 1931 Czeslaw was shot by Ladd and the police found numerous bodies. Ladd survives with Lua torn off his arm, still offering her death, and Chane is found alive in the river.

Finally, the Incredibles 4 meet in the Manhattan train station, with an open end.

Characters

The crazy thieves

Isaac Dian, デ ィ ア ン ア イ ザ ッ ク , Dian Aizakku , spoken by Masaya Onosaka
Miria Harvent, ハ ー ヴ ェ ン ト ミ リ ア , Hāvento Miria , spoken by Sayaka Aoki

The two form a crazy pair of thieves whose success is based on using the most unusual methods to commit theft. For example, they rob a watch shop with the aim of stealing time , or even plan to steal an entire museum (including the building). They like to dress up in the strangest costumes. In the opening credits of the anime, for example, Isaac with a pumpkin mask and Miria in a Santa suit stealing candy can be seen. Because of their peculiar clothes, both are taken to be actors by others. The source of the crazy ideas is mostly Isaac, whose ideas Miria unhesitatingly supports and tends to imitate her Isaac. Both of them become immortal by chance in 1930.

The Martillo family

Firo Prochainezo, プ ロ シ ェ ン ツ ォ フ ィ ー ロ , Puroshentso Fīro , spoken by Hiroyuki Yoshino
Maiza Avaro, ア ヴ ァ ー ロ マ イ ザ ー , Avāro Maizā , spoken by Mitsuru Miyamoto

Maiza Avaro, the former summoner of the demon who brought immortality to the alchemists in 1711, is a leading member of the Camorra Martillo family in 1930 . This is followed by the still young but not immortal Firo Prochainezo. Both are more cautious, as Maiza has to beware of Szilard Quates, who is interested in the secret of the summoning of the demon and only Maiza has the second half of the knowledge. Firo meanwhile keeps an eye on Szilard's assistant Ennis and unconsciously establishes a connection between the two archenemies.

The Gandor family

Keith Gandor, ガ ン ド ー ル キ ー ス , Gandōru Kīsu
Berga Gandor, ガ ン ド ー ル ベ ル ガ , Gandōru Beruga , spoken by Kenta Miyake
Luck Gandor, ガ ン ド ー ル ラ ッ ク , Gandōru Rakku , spoken by Takehito Koyasu
Claire Stanfield, ス タ ン フ ィ ー ル ド ク レ ア , Sutanfīrudo Kurea , spoken by Masakazu Morita

The three brothers are the leaders of the Gandor Mafia family. The oldest of the brothers is Keith with his always gloomy look, who does not say a single word in the entire series and accordingly has no voice actor ( seiyū ). Berga usually has an evil eye, but he is a big, violent leader who loves to beat his opponents to a pulp before handing them over to Mr. Tick , a madman obsessed with torture. The head of the family is Luck, the youngest of the three brothers. His face smiles most of the time. Still, he's a professional and a close friend of Firo - which leads to a good relationship between the Gandors and the Martillos.

Clair grew up with the Gandor brothers and is considered part of the family. Nicknamed Vino ( Spanish for wine ), he is known for mutilating his victims beyond recognition, which completely soaks him in blood. On the Flying Pussyfoot he takes on the role of the “rail tracer” and is responsible for the deaths of numerous passengers. However, he spares unarmed passengers and develops a love for Chane at first sight.

Follower of Szilard Quates

Szilard Quates, ク ェ ー ツ セ ラ ー ド , Kwētsu Serādo , spoken by Kinryū Arimoto
Ennis, エ ニ ス , Enisu , spoken by Sanae Kobayashi
Barnes, バ ー ン ズ , Bānzu , spoken by Tomomichi Nishimura

Szilard Quates is the first immortal alchemist, dating back to 1711, and looking for the second part of the formula that Maiza Avaro has in his possession. After killing Maiza's brother, he was only able to "suck" half the knowledge out of Maiza's brother. With the incomplete formula, he could only produce incomplete immortals. They are immune to physical damage, but age. Despite his age, Szilard is extremely agile and strong. So by 1930 he killed / ate eighteen of the members of the Advena Avis .

Always looking for the elixir, he entrusted the other lower Barnes with the research, who ultimately succeeds in making the elixir, but can only save two finished bottles of it due to an accident.

Szilard created Ennis as a homunculus to serve him. She shouldn't have any feelings or thoughts of her own and should only obey his commands. Still, she develops human emotions over time (especially after meeting Isaac and Miria).

The Russo family

Ladd Russo, ル ッ ソ ラ ッ ド , Russo Raddo , spoken by Keiji Fujiwara
Lua Klein, ク ラ イ ン ル ー ア , Kurain Rūa , spoken by Eri Yasui

Ladd and his followers of the Russo family are sadistic killers for whom there is nothing better than killing other people. This is particularly clear from the example of Ladd, who, like a small child, cannot wait to participate in the killing and who shines with joy after killing someone. In a purely provocative way, he and his followers dressed in white suits and had a bloody argument with the followers of Huey Laforet on the Flying Pussyfoot . Ladd's lover is Lua Klein, a beautiful woman with a very indifferent, shy expression on her face.

Followers of Huey Laforet

Huey Laforet, ラ フ ォ レ ッ ト ヒ ュ ー イ , Raforetto Hyūi , spoken by ???
Chane Laforet, ラ フ ォ レ ッ ト シ ャ ー ネ , Raforetto Shāne , spoken by Ryō Hirohashi

Huey Laforet also became immortal as early as 1711, but was tracked down by the government and has been held captive on Newfoundland ever since . He has a believing following who would do anything to free him. Huey himself does not agree with the methods of his followers and is aware that they are only interested in the secret of immortality. His supporters climb the Flying Pussyfoot with his daughter Chane to kidnap the president's wife and daughter. The silent Chane proves to be very skilled in using the knife and is able to communicate telepathically with her father. On the train, she clashes with Claire, whom she leaves with a hint that she will wait for him forever in Manhattan . At the same time, she met nice people for the first time with Jacuzzi and his gang.

Friends of Jacuzzi Splot

Jacuzzi Splot, ス プ ロ ッ ト ジ ャ グ ジ ー , Supurotto Jagujī , spoken by Yū Kobayashi
Nice Holystone, ホ ー リ ー ス ト ー ン ニ ー ス , Hōrīsutōn Nīsu , spoken by Daisuke Sakaguchi
Donny, ド ニ ー , Toni , voiced by Yoshinori Sonobe
Nick, ニ ッ ク , Nikku , voiced by Kunihiro Kawamoto

Although Jacuzzi is a scaredy, he shows unusual courage and qualities of a leader under certain circumstances. After the death of an unspecified member of the gang, Jacuzzi, armed with a machine gun, robbed a record-breaking number of stores while tears still came from his eyes. Since then he has been on the list of wanted criminals and is hunted for a reward that has been offered to him. He is easily recognized by his tattoo in the form of a sword on his face, which he had made when Nice was badly burned in an explosion accident. Most of the time, however, his lover only has her self-made bombs in mind, even if she lost her right eye as a child. The two are accompanied by gang members Donny and Nick. Although Donny is a real giant and can bend a pistol effortlessly, but hardly fits through a door on the train. Nick, on the other hand, is a fairly optimistic but perfectly normal helper.

The Genoard siblings

Eve Genoard, ジ ェ ノ ア ー ド イ ブ , Jenoādo Ibu , voiced by Marina Inoue
Dallas Genoard, ジ ェ ノ ア ー ド ダ ラ ス , Jenoādo Darasu , spoken by Atsushi Imaruoka

Eve is the younger sister of Dallas and is looking for her missing brother. In doing so, she consciously gets involved in the relationships of the Mafia, believing that she can find her brother and his good heart. Meanwhile, Dallas is the leader of a small group of thugs who ignorantly ensure that the two bottles with the elixir of immortality go unknown ways. Szilard turns the thugs into semi-immortals and Dallas is sunk in concrete by the Gandors in the city's harbor, where he has been drowning again and again ever since.

Daily Days employee

Rachel, レ イ チ ェ ル , Reicheru , spoken by Shizuka Itō
Nicholas Wayne, ウ ェ イ ン ニ コ ラ ス , Uein Nikurasu , voiced by Tōru Furusawa
Elean Douger, ド ゥ ー ガ ー エ レ ア ン , Doūkā Erean , spoken by Taiten Kusunoki
Chef 社長 , Shachō , spoken by Shō Hayami
Gustave St. Germain, サ ン ジ ェ ル マ ン ギ ュ ス タ ー ヴ , San Jeruman Gyusutāvu , voiced by Norio Wakamoto
Carol, キ ャ ロ ル , Kyaroru , spoken by Khiva Saitō

The news magazine Daily Days seems to make money mainly by selling information to the highest bidder, exploiting the ties of the warring gangs. Rachel is sent as a passenger on the Flying Pussyfoot to observe the groups. Within the Daily Days business , Nicholas Wayne usually takes on the handling of information seekers, whom he likes to cheat on. However, Eve Genoard receives special treatment, as Elean Douger is also the boss's second hand and is also related to Eve's housekeeper. The boss himself is never visible and is hidden behind a desk overflowing with documents.

In the framework of the anime, the Vice Director Gustave St. Germain corrects and questions the very young Carol, who is supposed to try to summarize the past events. He himself is very sober and tough towards her, so Carol has great respect for him.

The Baltro family

Baltro, ル ノ ラ ー タ バ ル ト ロ , spoken by Ryusuke Ōbayashi
Gustavo Baggetta, バ ジ ェ ッ タ グ ス タ ー ヴ ォ , Bajetta Gusutāvu , spoken by Sasaki Seiji

The Baltro family nearly completely knocked out the Genoards and is in the process of covering their tracks, which extend into the United States Senate. Baltro is in contact with a member of the Senate whose wife and child want to kidnap the supporters of Huey Laforet . He rarely gets his hands dirty and sends his aggressive thug Gustavo Baggetta to silence Dallas Genoard. At the same time, they are in conflict with the Gandors and Martillos.

loner

Czeslaw Meyer, メ イ エ ル チ ェ ス ワ フ , Chesuwafu Meieru , spoken by Akemi Kanda

Czeslaw became immortal as a child in 1711 and has not aged since then and is clearly inferior to the other immortals. His “protector” on the Advena Avis used him to experiment. He was repeatedly killed and mistreated, so that immortality became a curse for him. After he managed to escape, he became terrified of other immortals and set himself the goal of "eating" them all before they can.
