The vehicles of the VIII series , from 1868 genus Vc were broad gauge - locomotives of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways .

The locomotives were the last with the 1A1 wheel arrangement in Baden and the last locomotives for the broad gauge of 1600 mm, which were procured before the network was converted to standard gauge in 1854. A future conversion to standard gauge was taken into account during construction. The boiler was a replica of the Stephenson design and rested on an internal fork frame. The two-cylinder wet steam engine was arranged on the outside. The vehicles had a Tender of type 3 T 5.40.

When the locomotives were inspected, it was found that the boiler axis was 300 mm higher than the specified dimension. They feared safety problems and only took over the locomotives with reservations. During the conversion to the standard gauge in 1854, the boiler was then lowered. The locomotives were also converted to the 1B wheel arrangement. In 1865 there was another conversion to tank locomotives. A saddle tank was mounted on the boiler.

The locomotives were used on the Oos - Baden route .

A locomotive supplied by Hartmann & Lindt with the name LOERRACH was also included in this class . However, its technical parameters differed considerably from the locomotives supplied by Kessler. The extremely short wheelbase of the coupled wheels was remarkable. The performance of the locomotive was very poor. One of the causes was the small cylinder stroke of 457 mm. It was only after Kessler had rebuilt the locomotive in 1848 that it was taken over by the State Railways. However, the vehicle quickly migrated to construction train service.
