List of train stations in Austria |
The Bockstein Station is an abandoned holding station of the ÖBB on the Tauern railway in the town of Bad Gastein in the province of Salzburg . It is now the loading point for the car lock to Mallnitz-Obervellach.
location
The station is located at the end of the Gastein Valley , 1½ kilometers southeast of the village of Böckstein in the Anlauftal , and is the core of the settlement in this alpine valley. The Tauern tunnel crosses here in the Radhausberg massif under the main Alpine ridge to Carinthia near Mallnitz in the Mölltal . The north portal of the tunnel is located directly behind the train station.
architecture
The station was built in 1905 as part of the Tauern tunnel. The reception building is a classic Wilhelminian style central projectile building, in exposed natural stone with a crooked hip roof . It is equipped with secessionist decor and is a listed building .
Usage today
Today the station is the loading point of the ÖBB Tauern lock between Böckstein and Mallnitz-Obervellach , the only road transalpine between the Tauern motorway (A10) near Radstadt im Ennspongau and the Großglockner high alpine road near Zell am See in Pinzgau .
From 5:20 am to 11:20 pm, a train per hour leaves with a car transporter, so that around 30 vehicles can be transported on each journey. In addition, a double-decker control car hangs on the train, which is used to transport the motorists. The Tauern lock is the only way to cross the Alps in this area.
There is no longer any public transport at this station.
Furnishing
The station is equipped with three platforms, platforms 2 and 3 are used by long-distance trains or freight trains passing through. The Tauernschleuse trains depart from platform 1, which is connected to the station building. Platforms 2/3 are connected to platform 1 by an underpass.
