The Potsdam-Babelsberg Station is a S-Bahn station in Potsdam district Babelsberg . It is located on the tracks of the extended Wannseebahn between Griebnitzsee station and Potsdam Central Station . The station with its stairs on both sides of the platform is on the list of monuments of the city of Potsdam.

location

The station is located in the Babelsberg district and is enclosed by Rudolf-Breitscheid-Strasse, Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse, Schulstrasse and Wattstrasse. It is located at route kilometer 31.2 of the Wannseebahn, which in this area runs parallel to the mainline tracks of the Berlin – Magdeburg railway line (main line).

history

The platform, 2012

A first stop in Babelsberg was set up in 1862 under the name Neuendorf as a special stop for the court trains of the Prussian king on the main line . It was located west of today's train station. From 1866/1868, regular trains stopped at the station, which was initially equipped with a side platform , and later a second side platform was added.

From 1888, the tracks of the Wannseebahn from Neubabelsberg (today: Griebnitzsee) to Potsdam were extended, so that four tracks ran in this section. The old train station was closed and a new suburban train station was opened on the Wannsee railway tracks in its current location. From May 1, 1890, this bore the double name Neuendorf-Nowawes , renamed Nowawes on March 1, 1908 , the Czech translation of Neuendorf. In the years 1911 to 1914 the line was raised and the current station was built.

From June 11, 1928, the station was served by the electric trains of the Berlin city, ring and suburban railways, which have been running under the name S-Bahn since September 1 . The trains ran primarily on the suburban tracks of the Wetzlarer Bahn to the Berlin Stadtbahn instead of the Wannseebahn. Eight years later, on April 1, 1938, the station was named Babelsberg , and the following year the city of the same name was incorporated into Potsdam.

The introduction of border controls in interzonal traffic led to the station being closed for several days in February 1951.

When the Wall was built on August 13, 1961, the railway connection from Potsdam to West Berlin was interrupted. A S-Bahn island traffic between Potsdam City, Babelsberg and Griebnitzsee was maintained until October 9, and then replaced by diesel multiple units. For this purpose, a track connection was established from the suburb to the long-distance tracks. The trains ran from Griebnitzsee via Babelsberg, Potsdam City, Potsdam West (today: Potsdam Charlottenhof ) to Potsdam Hauptbahnhof (today Potsdam Pirschheide ). On October 29 of the same year, the Griebnitzsee station was converted into a pure control station and the diesel railcars withdrew to Babelsberg.

After the border was opened in 1989, the diesel trains from Babelsberg via Griebnitzsee to Berlin-Wannsee were connected on January 22, 1990 . On April 1, 1992, the S-Bahn took over again. Four years later, the railway station was renovated to meet the requirements of historical monuments.

In 2016, the platform as well as the track and switch systems were extensively renovated. In addition, the around 100-year-old retaining wall located directly in front of the station was renovated and reinforced with twelve pilaster strips with three steel anchors each.

The station consists of a 159 meter long island platform in an elevated position with two platform tracks on the otherwise single-track S-Bahn line in this area. It is used regularly for train crossings . The two long-distance train tracks run south past the station. At both ends of the platform, a staircase leads to an anteroom with skylights, which used to be the ticket office. Today the premises are used by a restaurant, snack bars and a flower shop. Exits lead to Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse in the west and Wattstrasse in the east.

The station is a listed building .

Connection

The S-Bahn station is served by the S7 line of the Berlin S-Bahn. There is a possibility to change to the bus and tram lines of the Potsdam transport company.
