The Burg- und Nieder-Gemünden train station is, along with Ehringshausen (Oberhess) train station, one of two train stations in the eastern Hessian community of Gemünden (Felda) in the Vogelsberg district . It is located at 38.0 km of the Vogelsbergbahn (Gießen – Fulda). From 1901 to 1991 the railway line Kirchhain – Burg- and Nieder-Gemünden (Ohmtalbahn) branched off here via Homberg (Ohm) to Kirchhain . It is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act , the station building itself is in a neglected condition.

history

The Burg- und Nieder-Gemünden station was opened on July 29, 1870 with the opening of the Grünberg – Alsfeld section of the Vogelsberg Railway. On October 30th of the same year the Vogelsbergbahn was extended to Lauterbach , on December 31st to Bad Salzschlirf . On July 31, 1871, it was completed with the Bad Salzschlirf – Fulda section.

On April 1, 1901, the Burg- and Nieder-Gemünden – Nieder-Ofleiden section of the Kirchhain – Burg- and Nieder-Gemünden railway was opened by the Hessian State Railways .

On May 31, 1980, passenger traffic on the Kirchhain – Burg- and Nieder-Gemünden railway was stopped. On September 28, 1991, freight traffic ended up to the connection of the basalt works at Nieder-Ofleiden , and the section was closed. When the Ohm Valley Railway was dismantled in 1999, the Burg- und Nieder-Gemünden station was turned back to a stopping point.

location

The Burg- und Nieder-Gemünden train station serves the two eponymous districts of Burg-Gemünden and Nieder-Gemünden in the municipality of Gemünden (Felda) . It has the house number Bahnhofstraße 14 and is located on the southwestern outskirts of Nieder-Gemünden.

Railway systems

Tracks

The Burg- und Nieder-Gemünden railway station had 5 tracks on 3 platforms until the Kirchhain – Burg- und Nieder-Gemünden railway was partially closed. The main platform on track 1 and track 2 served the Vogelsbergbahn from Gießen to Fulda. The remaining tracks (tracks 3 to 5) served the Kirchhain – Burg- and Nieder-Gemünden railway. Except for the house platform, which is still used by the Vogelsbergbahn trains today, all the other tracks are overgrown but not dismantled. Shortly after the disused signal box in the north of the station, the route of the Kirchhain – Burg- and Nieder-Gemünden railway swung north. Shortly afterwards the remaining track ends.

Reception building

The reception building of the station castle and Nieder-Gemünden dates back to 1870, the founding period of the Vogelsberg Railway. It has been empty for a long time and is visibly deteriorating. In 2012 the reception building was put up for auction with a minimum bid of 1,000 euros.

Signal box

The mechanical interlocking of the Zimmermann and Buchloh type from 1909 in the north of the train station in Burg- and Nieder-Gemünden was decommissioned in 2008.
