The Station United Karben is located on kilometer 178.4 of of Kassel via Marburg and Giessen to Frankfurt leading Main-Weser Railway . It is located about one kilometer from the eponymous place, on the outskirts of the Karben district of Kloppenheim . Unlike the Karben district of Groß-Karben , it is written without a hyphen.

history

With the opening of the section of the Main-Weser Railway from Frankfurt to Friedberg , Groß-Karben station went into operation on May 10, 1850. The entire route of the Main-Weser Railway from Kassel to Frankfurt has been used since May 15, 1852.

On January 28, 1907, a serious railway accident occurred at Taunusbrunnen immediately north of the station, with one dead and two seriously injured.

To the south of the station, an industrial siding branched off in an easterly direction to the current Continental Automotive Systems site , which is no longer used today and has been partially dismantled.

Since May 28, 1978 the Groß-Karben station has been served by the S6 S-Bahn line of the Rhein-Main S-Bahn .

Reception building

The reception building of the station, a traufständiges building with two floors with risalitartigem transept is in the Wetterau the only one still from the time of the Main-Weser Railway originates and its original appearance was preserved. It is classified as a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act.

Today (2014) the Groß-Karbener Bahnhof has a relay interlocking of the type Dr S2 with H / V light signals and three platform tracks on two platforms (side and middle platform). It is only served by the S6 S-Bahn line of the Rhein-Main S-Bahn . The S-Bahn runs every 15 minutes on weekdays from Friedberg or Groß-Karben via Bad Vilbel and the Frankfurt City Tunnel to Frankfurt's Südbahnhof . Every second train begins and ends in Groß-Karben on the centrally located siding. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, as well as in the morning and evening hours on workdays, the S-Bahn runs every 30 minutes from Friedberg to Frankfurt Süd. Regional, long-distance and freight trains run through the station without stopping.

S-Bahn, regional, long-distance and freight traffic share the two tracks of the Main-Weser Railway between Frankfurt West and Friedberg. In order to streamline operations, the line in this area is expected to be expanded in two sections to four tracks by 2016 . Building rights for the major project already exist in the Bad Vilbel area.
