The Neckarsteinach train station is next to the S-Bahn station Neckarhausen bei Neckarsteinach one of two railway stations in operation in the southern Hessian city of Neckarsteinach , 15 km east of Heidelberg . It is located on the Neckar Valley Railway from Heidelberg to Bad Friedrichshall . From 1928 to 1981, a branch line to Schönau branched off the Neckar Valley Railway. Since December 2003 it has been a stop on the S1 and S2 lines of the Rhein -Neckar S-Bahn .

Neckarsteinach train station is located on the southwestern outskirts of Neckarsteinach, directly on Bundesstraße 45 and not far from the Neckar . The Neckar Valley Railway makes here - just like the Neckar - a wide berth to the difficult topographical conditions of the Odenwald to overcome. The branch line to Schönau, which has now been closed, followed the Neckar Valley Railway for around 1.2 km in a westerly direction. Then it branched off in a northerly direction into the valley of the Steinach .

The Neckarsteinach train station was opened together with the Neckargemünd – Neckarsteinach – Eberbach – Neckarelz – Jagstfeld section of the Neckar Valley Railway Heidelberg – Bad Friedrichshall on May 24, 1879 by the Baden State Railway.
On June 16, 1914, a state treaty was signed between the two Grand Duchies of Baden and Hesse on the construction of a 5 km stretch from Neckarsteinach in Hesse to Schönau in Baden . However, construction of this branch line did not begin until 1927. The ceremonial opening of the line, also known as the “Steinachtalbahn”, finally took place on October 21, 1928, 14 years after the Baden-Hesse State Treaty was signed.
Passenger traffic on the route between Neckarsteinach and Schönau ceased on September 28, 1969. The freight rolled until November 1, 1981. After adjustment of freight carried the total closure of the railway line Neckarsteinach-Schonau.
In January 2000, the Neckarsteinach – Schönau line was officially de-dedicated . Since July 2008 there is a 3.5 km long, continuous cycle path on the former route .
For the 2003/2004 timetable change on December 14, 2003, Neckarsteinach station was integrated into the RheinNeckar S-Bahn system. The station was fundamentally modernized and downgraded from the station to the stop . The old central platform on tracks 2 and 3 and track 3, which served the branch line to Schönau, were removed and a new side platform with pedestrian underpass was built on track 2. Both platforms were built barrier-free .

Tracks and platforms
The station has two continuous tracks, each with an outside platform. The S-Bahn lines S1 and S2 run from platform 1 via Eberbach and Neckarelz to Mosbach and Osterburken . Track 2 takes you to Neckargemünd , Heidelberg , Mannheim , Ludwigshafen , Neustadt , Kaiserslautern and Homburg (Saar) .
The platform height of the platforms in Neckarsteinach train station was increased to 76 centimeters - as with the other subway stations from Heidelberg to Neckarelz - in order to enable level entry into the S-Bahn. As with the other on-the-go stations, the platforms are 140 meters long.

Like the entire Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, the Neckarsteinach train station is in the tariff area of the Rhein-Neckar transport association (VRN). Since Neckarsteinach is in the part of Hesse that can only be reached by rail from Baden , the offers of the adjacent Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) also apply , whose core tariff area begins with the Hesseneck Kailbach station, located on the Hessian Odenwaldbahn between Erbach and Eberbach , beyond the Baden town of Eberbach to the small towns of Hirschhorn and Neckarsteinach in Hesse .
