The Aschersleben – Nienhagen line was a standard-gauge, non-electrified branch line in Saxony-Anhalt . It opened up the landscape in the south of the Magdeburg Börde around the Hakel ridge with its lignite mines . The line was initially built and operated by Aschersleben-Schneidlingen-Nienhagener Eisenbahn AG (ASN).

history

The railway company was founded on September 24, 1895 as Aschersleben-Schneidlingen-Nienhagener Kleinbahn AG . On May 22, 1928, her name was changed to Aschersleben-Schneidlingen-Nienhagener Eisenbahn AG .

The founders included the Allgemeine Deutsche Kleinbahn-Gesellschaft AG , the Hildesheimer Bank and the cities of Gröningen , Kroppenstedt and Cochstedt , as well as the operators of two brown coal mines.

After it was founded, ASN bought the 9.9 km long Aschersleben - Königsaue mine railway , which was opened by the Graf Douglas union on September 20, 1892, and the Schneidlingen – Archibald mine (0.6 km). She also leased the connecting line Nienhagen –Gröningen (4.6 km) , built in 1879, of the Wiersdorff, Hecker & Co sugar factory in Gröningen, which had existed since 1864, and also acquired one of the sugar factory's locomotives.

Rail operations on the 46-kilometer, standard-gauge line Aschersleben West (after 1938: North) –Schneidlingen North – Nienhagen South were opened on April 1, 1897. The passenger trains were broken up in Schneidlingen, there were no through trains during the small railroad era. The ASN established connections to the state railway for numerous small towns and communities; in Aschersleben on the main lines Halle – Halberstadt and Köthen – Aschersleben , in Schneidlingen on the branch line Staßfurt – Blumenberg and in Nienhagen on the main line Magdeburg – Thale .

The departure point in Aschersleben was relocated to Hecklinger Straße - 400 meters from the state train station - on October 1, 1910, thus extending the route by almost one kilometer.

The company ran from October 21, 1903 the Allgemeine Deutsche Kleinbahn-Gesellschaft AG as the main shareholder, which from June 28, 1923 called itself Allgemeine Deutsche Eisenbahn-AG . From January 1, 1926, its daughter, Allgemeine Deutsche Eisenbahn-Betriebs-GmbH , took its place.

After the Second World War, the company, which at that time belonged predominantly to the AG for Transport , was expropriated and the railway was subordinated to the Province of Saxony from August 15, 1945 , to the Sächsische Provinzbahnen GmbH from December 15, 1946 , until it was transferred to the Deutsche Reichsbahn was incorporated.

The gradual shutdown began with the cessation of passenger traffic between Aschersleben and Schneidlingen on November 3, 1963, at the same time freight traffic to Hakelforst. From Schneidlingen to Kroppenstedt, the entire operation ended on May 23, 1965 and on the remaining section to Nienhagen on May 21, 1966. However, the connection at Hakelforst and the Gröningen sugar factory was served until January 10, 1994, between Cochstedt and Schneidlingen was still Freight traffic possible until January 1, 1996.

From mid-2015, Magdeburg-Cochstedt Airport was to be linked with an 11.5-kilometer connecting route from Cochstedt to promote freight traffic there. The connection was originally planned for autumn 2014.
