The Bruntál – Malá Morávka railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built and operated as a local railway by the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) . It branches in Bruntál ( Freudenthal ) from the railway line Olomouc-Opava východ and leads in Altvatergebirge to Malá Morávka ( Kleinmohrau ).

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

The line was opened on May 31, 1901. The kkStB was in charge of the operation itself.

In 1912, the local railway's timetable showed a total of three mixed pairs of trains, supplemented by a pair of passenger trains serving excursions on Sundays and public holidays. The trains took between 56 and 69 minutes for the 17-kilometer route uphill.

Rudná pod Pradědem stop (2011)

After the First World War , which Austria-Hungary lost , the line became the property of the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD).

At the end of the 1920s / beginning of the 1930s, the travel offer was gradually reduced in favor of faster bus routes. The winter timetable of 1937/38 finally only recorded one daily pair of trains, supplemented by another one on Saturdays. The timetable also included a train for day trippers on Sundays.

After the Sudetenland was annexed to Germany in autumn 1938, the line came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Opole . In the Reichskursbuch the connection was included as the route 151t Freudenthal – Klein Mohrau . After the end of the Second World War , the route was completely returned to the ČSD.

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia . Since 2003 it has been part of the network of the state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC).

Malá Morávka railway station (2009)

In the 1990s, passenger train traffic only took place on weekends in the summer tourist season. In the 2009 annual timetable, five pairs of passenger trains ran on the route between May 1 and October 28 on weekends and public holidays. Since the timetable change on December 13, 2009, there is no longer any regular passenger train service. Since then, only a few special trains have run.

In autumn 2010, the route appeared on the list of routes to be closed by the Ministry of Transport. After hearing the route operator SŽDC, there was no prospect of renewal of freight traffic at that time. The responsible authority Moravskoslezský kraj also did not expect a resumption of local rail passenger transport. The SŽDC considered maintaining the route for a few train journeys per year as unprofitable. The Ministry of the Interior approved the intended closure on November 1, 2010. The municipality of Malá Morávka issued a statement against the closure. In the justification for this decision by the ministry, it is stated that the declaration by the municipality of Malá Morávka does not contain any specific information on the current use of the route, the financing of traffic or the possible takeover of the route by third parties. Following a proposal by SŽDC on September 29, 2010, the Ministry of Transport decided on January 7, 2011 to close the line. The SŽDC then announced that the route would be closed, but not dismantled. On August 26, 2011, the entire decommissioning procedure was lifted again.

From June 30, 2018, five pairs of tourist trains will operate on weekends and public holidays in the summer months. The operator of the trains is Slezský železniční spolek , the commissioned railway company is MBM rail. A historic train set from a ČSD series T 211.0 locomotive and a sidecar from the Blm series are used . In Malá Morávka there is a connection to a tourist bus line from and to Karlova Studánka ( Karlsbrunn Spa ).

Between April and June 2019, the route operator SŽDC will carry out repair work on the route. In addition to the renewal of tracks and systems in sections, some culverts and bridges are also being repaired. Malá Morávka gets a new platform. According to SŽDC, freight trains for the wood processing industry are currently running regularly in Světlá Hora. The removal of bark beetle-damaged wood from the forests of the Jeseníky Mountains is also large.
