history

The line was intended as a strategic connection between the Turin – Savona line near Ceva and the Ligurian coast near Oneglia . It was approved in 1879 by Law No. 5002 ( Legge Baccarini ).

The first section to Ormea in the Ligurian Alps was built and commissioned between 1889 and 1893, after which the route was not extended. The Tendabahn over the Colle di Tenda , built around the same time, was seen as a better option for meeting the strategic objectives.

In 1938 the line was electrified with a 3600 V three-phase alternating current system. When all electrical lines were converted to direct current in Piedmont in 1973, the decision was made to dismantle the overhead line and switch to diesel multiple units due to the low utilization of the line.

Today's situation

With the timetable change on June 17, 2012, the regional government of Piedmont decided to stop passenger traffic. However, the route remains in an operational condition, even if it is no longer used. As of 2018, there are plans to use the route for tourist train traffic again.
