The Turin – Fossano – Savona line is operated by the Italian State Railways Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) . It connects Piedmont with Savona on the Ligurian Mediterranean coast and overcomes the mountain range of the Apennines . The line has a length of 153 km, it is largely double-track and electrified with 3000 V direct current. In the mountains, the tracks for both directions of travel do not run parallel, as is generally the case, but sometimes on separate lines for each direction.

History and lines

The route was built in several construction phases:

The continuous connection from Turin to Savona was inaugurated in 1874. Starting in Savona, the route leads via Ferrania to San Giuseppe and on to Ceva and is initially single-track in this area. The connection between Ceva and Turin originally ran via Bra , the Ceva – Bra section is now largely closed.

At the beginning of the 20th century, plans began to double-track the line. The first step was the construction of the line in the north of the Apennine Mountains from Ceva via Mondovì to Fassano. This section was completed in 1933 and also served as a replacement for the previous winding route over Bra. In Fassano there is a connection to the double-track line from Cuneo to Turin.

The planning of the double-track expansion of the mountain line from San Giuseppe to Savona caused major difficulties. Due to the mountainous terrain, a completely new route was chosen, which was initially implemented as a single track, but was intended to be used as a replacement for the old line for a later double-track expansion. The work was delayed by the First World War. In 1923 a six-kilometer section from San Giuseppe to Altare was completed. The construction was further delayed, so that the whole route to Savona could not be put into operation until 1954. Both the old and the new route have numerous tunnels and bridges, a special feature of the new route is a spiral tunnel to cope with the steep difference in altitude on the Ligurian side. The construction of the parallel track and the closure of the original route are currently being discussed in the political committees. The section from Ceva to San Giuseppe is also unchanged on a single track. Coincidentally, the A6 motorway from Turin to Savona in Liguria also has two spatially separate lines for both lanes, whereby historical reasons were also decisive.
