The Ebermannstadt – Heiligenstadt line was a branch line in Bavaria . It led from Ebermannstadt through the Leinleitertal to Heiligenstadt .

history

It was not until twenty years after the Forchheim – Behringersmühle railway line had been approved that a law was passed on June 26, 1908 to extend it, which, however, did not continue in the Wiesent valley, but instead turned north at Gasseldorf into the Leinleitertal valley and ended in Heiligenstadt. A desired extension beyond Heiligenstadt to the Hollfeld railway line was rejected by the state railway because of the demanding topography. When the 11 km long line extension went into operation on October 4, 1915, the First World War had been raging for over a year , which then initially prevented further railway construction in Franconian Switzerland , before the Gasseldorf – Behringersmühle connection was gradually built from 1922 to 1930. Travel was now directed to the Forchheim – Behringersmühle route, travelers to Heiligenstadt had to change trains in Ebermannstadt.

In the 1930s, six pairs of passenger trains ran the route every day, and up to seven in the 1950s.

Former route near Veilbronn

With the increase in motorized individual traffic in the 1950s, there was a rapid decline in passenger numbers, which was due in particular to the lack of continuous connections from Forchheim. As a result, the Deutsche Bundesbahn stopped passenger traffic on May 29, 1960 and freight traffic on May 26, 1968.

After the closure, the line was dismantled. Between Unterleinleiter and Heiligenstadt, the route is reused by a cycle path.

Vehicle use

Steam locomotives of the series 86 and later diesel railcars of the series VT 86 were used for passenger transport.
