The Horná Štubňa – Prievidza line is a branch line in Slovakia . It represents a connecting line between the Horná Nitra ( Oberneutra ) and Turiec ( Turz ) regions and connects central and north-western Slovakia.

history

Today's line was opened to traffic in two parts: the Prievidza – Handlová line in the Handlovka Valley with a short tunnel was opened on February 15, 1913 and was mainly used to transport lignite from the mining areas around Handlová.

The second section of the route was more complex, as the Žiar Mountains had to be crossed under a three-kilometer tunnel. The tunnel was the longest tunnel in Czechoslovakia when it opened . In addition, four other short tunnels were built, including the tunnel at Horná Štubňa, which made it possible to connect the line to the existing railway line towards Zvolen. Construction began in 1928 and the track was released on 20 December 1931 the costs, amounted to 152 million .

Today there are some local trains that need about an hour's travel time for the entire route. In addition, freight trains run from Handlová to the coal-fired power station in the nearby town of Zemianske Kostoľany .
