The Kimstad – Norrköping railway was a narrow-gauge railway between Finspång in Östergötland and Norsholm on the Östra stamban in Sweden . It had a track width of 891 mm and was built by Norra Östergötlands järnvägsaktiebolag (NÖJ).

history

The Norra Östergötlands järnvägsaktiebolag was founded on November 30, 1895. The purpose of the company was to acquire Pålsboda – Finspång Jernvägsaktiebolag and Finspång – Norsholms Järnvägsaktiebolag in order to jointly operate their routes between Pålsboda and Finspång and Finspång and Norsholm .

Behind this entire development stood patron Carl Edvard Ekman . He was the one who built Pålsboda – Finspångs Järnväg with strong support from local authorities and private individuals . He had also built Finspång – Norsholms Järnväg mainly with his own resources . It was his proposal to merge the two railways to form Norra Östergötlands järnvägsaktiebolag (NÖJ).

Construction of the route

As early as 1899, an extension of the route to Norrköping was planned with Kimstad as the starting point. A cost estimate was drawn up, this provided for construction costs in the amount of 423,000 crowns. A license was applied for.

Until the merger, Finspångs styckebruk had a share in the route between Finspång and Norsholm, which went over to the NÖJ. Counter-proposals have now emerged. The old planned route north of Lake Glan was to connect Finspång with Fiskeby on the Östra stamban and on to Norrköping in standard gauge to reach the port there. This would give Finspång a direct connection to the port without reloading the goods. Ekman supported this proposal.

Another counter-proposal concerned a railway from Finspång via Fiskeby without a connection to the state railway. It should meet in Kneippbaden on the Kimstad – Norrköpings Östra route. In 1903 P. Orre, JS Lindby and G. Falkengren applied for a license for this route. In the same year, among others, the hut owner Ax. Ekman obtained the concession for a line Finspång – Butbro – Norrköping.

There were three applications for the construction of narrow-gauge railways at the same time, all with the end point in Norrköping:

  • Finspång – Butbro – Norrköping,
  • Maspelösa – Ljusfors – Norrköping,
  • Kimstad – Norrkoping.

The Royal Construction Office decided on July 3, 1903 for the Kimstad – Norrköping proposal. The license was transferred to the NÖJ on December 19, 1903. In 1905 the city of Norrköping applied for the concession to be transferred for the last five kilometers in the city and for the 1.5 kilometer long port railway. The reason for this was that the city planners planned a new location for the Norrköping Östra station. This delayed the construction of the railway and so the line could initially only be built as far as Kneippbaden station and on to a provisional terminal stop. Traffic on this section was opened on June 6, 1906.

An agreement was reached between the city of Norrköping and Vikbolandsbanan on the new location of Norrköping Östra station. After years of legal dispute, it was decided how the NÖJ should be connected to the new station. For the NÖJ it meant an extension of the route by 600 meters. Following the conclusion of this pending lawsuit, the line between the provisional station (about 1.3 kilometers from Norrköping Östra) and Norrköping Östra station was put into operation on August 2, 1910.
