The railway line Kladno – Kralupy nad Vltavou is a railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built and operated by the kk priv. Buschtěhrad Railway (BEB). It runs in Central Bohemia from Kralupy nad Vltavou to Kladno .

The route Kladno – Kralupy nad Vltavou is classified in the railway network of the Czech Republic as a national railway ("celostátní dráha").

history

The route from Kladno to Kralupy was the first railway connection of the Buschtěhrad Railway. The construction of the line began almost a year before the requested license was granted by the Klein brothers' company . On November 5, 1855, the first provisional operation could begin. The Buschtěhrad Railway finally received the concession to operate the line on November 20, 1855.

The official opening of the route took place on February 23, 1856. On that day a special train ran from Prague via Kralupy to Kladno. From July 23, 1856 passenger trains started running.

In 1863, the BEB received the concession to convert the old horse-drawn railway between Prague and Vejhybka to steam operation and standard gauge, and in 1867 the corresponding concession for the Vejhybka – Lány section. In this context, the BEB finally built a new route from Dubí to the Vejhybka railway station , which ran around Kladno in a wide arc. It was inaugurated on February 23, 1872 for all traffic. Tourist traffic between Dubí and Altkladno ceased on the same day.

The 1912 timetable only recorded three pairs of passenger trains for the Kladno – Kralup line , one of which only ran to and from Dubí. They needed about an hour for the entire route. The Buschtěhrad Railway was nationalized on January 1, 1923 as one of the last large private railways in Bohemia. From then on, the line was integrated into the network of the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD).

From the end of the 1920s, the timetable was more and more condensed, which was due in particular to the use of newly acquired, modern motorized railcars . The 1937 timetable recorded a total of nine pairs of passenger trains, of which only three were still running as a classic wagon train with steam locomotives. Uphill to Kladno, travel times were still around an hour, while downhill the fastest train (operated as a multiple unit) only took 45 minutes.

In October 1950, the line between Staré Kladno and Kladno-Dubí was downgraded to the connecting railway ("vlečka").

The old line from Staré Kladno lost its traffic in connection with the construction of a new rolling mill in Dříň , which was connected by a newly built connecting railway . The last freight train ran on November 7, 1983. Around 1990 the Staré Kladno – Kladno-Dubí line was canceled.

On January 1, 1993, as a result of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the line was transferred to the newly founded Czech state railway company České dráhy (ČD). Since 2003 it has been part of the network of the state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC).

In 2011, the route between Kladno and Kralupy nad Vltavou was served by passenger trains every two hours. In addition, the route between Kladno and Kladno-Ostrovec is integrated into the Esko Praha network. The S5 line ( Praha Masarykovo nádraží –Kladno-Ostrovec) serves the route every hour. In addition, express trains on the R5 line run every two hours on the same route. In addition, there is also a dense freight traffic, some of which is handled by ČD Cargo as well as by smaller private railway companies. Among other things, a block train with lignite from the North Bohemian Basin runs twice a day to supply the Kladno power plant with fuel.

The section from Kladno to Kladno-Ostrovec is to be double-tracked and electrified between 2021 and 2023 as part of the planning for a high-speed rail connection from Prague to Kladno. The tender was won by Metroprojekt, which had submitted the cheapest offer with 93 million crowns.
