The Leipzig – Eilenburg railway line is a predominantly double-track, electrified main line in Saxony , which was originally built and operated by the Halle-Sorau-Gubener Railway Company as the Eilenburg Railway . It runs from Leipzig to Eilenburg and is part of the long-distance connection from Leipzig to Cottbus .

history

The line branches off in Eilenburg from the Halle – Cottbus railway line built in 1872 . The route leads via Jesewitz and Taucha to Leipzig and is 23.6 kilometers long. On November 1, 1874, the line was opened as a connection to the Leipzig-Dresden Railway . In Leipzig, the Eilenburg train station , which was then on the eastern edge of the city, served as the end point.

In 1884 the line became part of the Halle-Sorau-Gubener Railway in the Prussian State Railway and on April 1, 1920 in the Deutsche Reichsbahn . From 1942, passenger traffic to and from the Eilenburg train station was completely stopped. From then on, all trains ran to Leipzig Central Station .

After the Second World War , the second track on this line was also dismantled. Since 1977 the line between Eilenburg and Jesewitz has been in operation again with two tracks. A year later, the two-track expansion between the Heiterblick junction and Taucha (near Leipzig) followed, and in 1980 the section between Taucha and Jesewitz was rebuilt to two-track. Because the bridge openings are not sufficiently free of profiles, the Leipzig Hbf – Heiterblick section is still single-track today. The electrification took place in 1988. Since 2016, the section between Leipzig North and Taucha with the Parthe crossing, in this area together with the freight ring route Wahren – Engelsdorf, has been renovated. On December 15, 2019, a new Leipzig-Mockauer Strasse stop was put into operation, whereby due to the current state of construction, only the southern edge of the platform can be used by S-Bahn trains. As part of this construction work, the Leipzig-Thekla and Taucha train stations received modern travel systems by the end of November 2019.

The section between Leipzig Eilenburger Bahnhof and the Abzw Anger was served by transfer trains for the local connections until about 1973. In the Eilenburg train station there was a loading ramp for "Culemeyer" road scooters . After the station was finally closed, the former track was shortened to Riebeckstraße. The last connections were the bridge warehouse of the bridge maintenance department in Halle and the bookbinding machine works of the Polygraph combine, formerly the Karl Krause machine factory. When the Abzw Anger signal box was rebuilt around 1988, the former track was still taken into account. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, the siding was tied off at the Abzw Anger. The superstructures on EÜ Zweinaundorfer Straße that are no longer in use were also removed. The planum became a green lane with a footpath and cycle path between the “Lene-Voigt-Park” on the site of the former Eilenburg train station and the new Anger-Crottendorf stop.

Taucha station after the modernization

The Taucha train station was rebuilt between October 2017 and November 2019. The previous intermediate platforms were replaced by an island platform, which can be reached barrier-free via an underpass, and new bridges were built over Portitzer Strasse and the Lösegraben. The new house platform, which went into operation on July 30, 2018, is no longer in front of the former reception building, but has been moved towards the bus station. Since the commissioning of an electronic interlocking of the Thales type in Taucha in November 2019, track switching has been possible between Taucha and Heiterblick . The level crossing in the train of the court route at the former signal box Tw could be abandoned.

Timetable and vehicle use

Trains of the RE 10 Leipzig – Cottbus and S4 Markkleeberg-Gaschwitz – Leipzig – Eilenburg – Torgau – Hoyerswerda lines are currently operating on this route . The S4 runs every half hour between Leipzig Hbf and Taucha. By linking the RE line, which runs every two hours, to the S-Bahn, there is also a daily half-hourly service to Eilenburg and on to Torgau, although not all access points are served. As a rule , push-pull trains made up of one class 112 locomotive and three double-decker cars run on line RE 10 . On the S4 line, three and four-part railcar units of the 442 series are mainly used individually. The S4 replaced the trains on the RE 11 and RB 115 lines that ran until December 2013 .
