The Nauendorf – Gerlebogk line is a single-track branch line in Saxony-Anhalt . The 15.2 km long line branched north of Halle (Saale) at the Nauendorf (Saalkr) train station in the Saale district from the Halle – Halberstadt railway line and ran north to Löbejün . From the terminus there , where the railway administration of the Nauendorf-Gerlebogker Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (NGE) had its seat, the railway continued on the Anhalt area via Gröbzig to Gerlebogk ; there was a connection to the Biendorf – Gerlebogk railway line . The railway line, which opened in 1900, is largely closed today, only a 3 km long section is still used by freight traffic.

Since the end of the 17th century, hard coal and lignite were mined around the two small towns of Löbejün and Gröbzig. After the founding of the empire in 1871, mining came to a standstill, as all the coal that had been extracted had to be transported by horse and cart. Above all, the Preusslitz coal railway of the Anhalt-Cöthen-Bernburger Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (ACBE), which opened in 1853 and gave the neighboring mines in the Duchy of Anhalt significant competitive advantages, had a particular disadvantage . The sugar industry and porphyry quarries also suffered from poor traffic conditions. Thus, a railway connection was more urgent needs, but who had Saalkreis time being no way for a railway construction.

As early as the 1860s, when the Magdeburg-Halberstädter Eisenbahngesellschaft (MHE) was planning the Halle-Halberstadt railway line , Löbejün had hopes of a railway connection. But the MHE chose a shorter route via Nauendorf . At least the city of Löbejün set up a horse-drawn bus connection to the Halle – Könnern section, which was opened in 1872. Further requests to the MHE and the ACBE to build a railway line to Löbejün were unsuccessful. Even the cross-connection planned after the MHE was taken over by the Prussian State Railroad did not run via Löbejün, instead it was opened as the Könnern – Baalberge line.

From then on, Löbejün himself looked for investors for a railway construction. The proposal of the United Railway Construction and Operating Company for a route Nauendorf – Löbejün – Gröbzig – Gerlebogk was initially rejected. Together with the district Bitterfeld the Saalkreis pursued an extension of juice railway Bitterfeld-Stumsdorf. This was not granted a license, and the construction of a narrow-gauge railway also failed, so the Nauendorf – Gerlebogk branch line was approved at the end of the 1890s.

The Nauendorf-Gerlebogker Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (NGE) was founded on January 24, 1899 by the United Railway Construction and Operating Company . Before that, the United Railway Construction and Operating Company had already received the concession for the railway line in 1898 and began construction work.

The marshy floodplain in particular posed some obstacles to the construction of the railway, but in May 1900 freight traffic on the Nauendorf – Gottgau section was able to begin. On July 18, 1900, passenger traffic began on the Nauendorf – Gröbzig section, and the last section to Gerlebogk was also used from October 5, 1900 . The management was handed over by the NGE to Vereinigte Eisenbahnbau- und Betriebs-Gesellschaft.

In 1901 this took over the management of the Preußlitzer coal railway and introduced passenger traffic. In the future there were direct connections between Biendorf and Nauendorf.

From 1921 the NGE handled the management itself. In 1926, the traffic on the Preußlitzer Kohlenbahn was again carried out by the Deutsche Reichsbahn , which left the passenger traffic to the NGE until 1929.

In 1927, the majority of the shares in NGE were transferred to the AG for Transport , which in 1928 placed the NGE under the management of Lenz & Co.

The constantly weak passenger traffic was transferred for economic reasons - with the exception of a pair of trains from Nauendorf to Löbejün - from May 15, 1929 to a power post line that also used direct buses to Halle and Köthen . Due to the war, it was put back on the rails during the Second World War. In the 1944 summer timetable, two pairs of trains between Nauendorf and Löbejün were listed on workdays.

After the end of the Second World War , the company was expropriated and the railway was initially assigned to the Sächsische Provinzbahnen GmbH from December 15, 1946 , and then to the Deutsche Reichsbahn from January 1, 1950 .

On September 28, 1963, travel was stopped.

Freight traffic lived from transports for coal mines, quarries and sugar factories. It was set at the end of 1973 between Gottgau and Gerlebogk, while it reached Gottgau until May 22, 1993, where a connecting line to Plötz colliery departed.

Löbejün was approached until 1999, after which the route from Domnitz (Saalkr) Kautzenberg was closed. The last stretch to Domnitz (Saalkr) Kautzenberg was converted into a station siding in 2000 . A natural stone plant is still served today.
