The Panský – Krásná Lípa railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built by the North Bohemian Industrial Railway as a state-guaranteed local railway . The short route runs from Panský ( Herrnwalde ) to Krásná Lípa ( Schönlinde ).

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

After the Bohemian Northern Railway opened the railway line from Rumburg via Schluckenau to Nixdorf in 1884 , the towns south of this line also requested their rail connection. In 1894, under the leadership of the industrialist Dr. Kindermann founded the North Bohemian Industrial Railway Consortium , which wanted to build the railway between Nixdorf, Zeidler , Herrnwalde and Rumburg, with a branch to Schönlinde, on its own.

The concession to build and operate a standard-gauge local train was granted by the Austrian state on August 3, 1901. The new railway managed almost without any special engineering structures such as bridges, tunnels or cuts. As the only operating point apart from the two connecting stations, a stop was set up in gardens (today: Zahrady u Rumburka ). In October 1902 the construction work could finally be finished. The new railway line was officially opened with a pageant on October 28, 1902.

The operation was initially carried out by the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) on behalf of the owners. After the First World War in 1918, the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD took over this task. The first ČSD timetable from 1919 recorded three pairs of trains between Herrnwalde and Krásná Lípa . The travel time over the 5-kilometer route was 15 minutes.

On January 1, 1925, the North Bohemian Industrial Railway was nationalized and incorporated into the ČSD.

On October 1, 1938, the railway area, like the entire Sudetenland , fell to Germany in accordance with the Munich Agreement . When the area was cleared at the end of September 1938, Czechoslovak troops destroyed about two kilometers of the route with a so-called rail wolf . The management of the line was now taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Dresden . The connection was now included in the imperial course book as course book route 162f Schönlinde-Herrnwalde . The 1944 timetable contained a total of five pairs of passenger trains on the entire route, all but one of which only ran on weekdays. The journey time was 12 minutes. At the end of the Second World War in May 1945, operations ceased.

After the end of the war, the route came to the re-established ČSD. Transport performance decreased to a minimum as a result of the expulsion of the German population. At the end of the 1980s, travel was limited to the needs of rush hour traffic, with daily driving as before. The 1988 timetable only showed three trains on the Rumburk – Pansky – Krásná Lípa route and two in the opposite direction.

In 1997, due to its minor importance to traffic, there was a threat that rail operations would be suspended for the first time. A takeover of the route by a private operator, which was planned at the time, did not materialize, however. Today passenger trains only run on weekends and holidays. The 2010 annual timetable included two pairs of passenger trains on the Rumburk – Krásná Lípa – Pansky – Dolní Poustevna route. Freight traffic no longer takes place.

Vehicle use

In the first few years of operation, the local railway locomotives of the kkStB series 97 (ČSD 310.0) were used in front of mixed trains.

From May 1, 1932, the ČSD started using the tower railcars of the ČSD series M 120.4 in passenger transport . There is also evidence of the use of railcars of the ČSD series M 242.0 at the end of the 1930s.

After the Second World War, the now outdated tower cars were replaced by the new M 131.1 class . Today the railcars of the 810 series (ČSD series M 152.0), which were put into service from the end of the 1970s, as well as the 814 ("Regionova") railcars reconstructed from these vehicles are used.

Between 2014 and 2017 inclusive, travel was carried out according to plan with the modern railcars of the ČD series 844 (“Regioshark”). Since 2018, České dráhy has only operated railcars of the ČD series 810 and ČD series 814 on the route .
