The Mikulášovice – Panský – Rumburk railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built and operated by the North Bohemian Industrial Railway as a state-guaranteed local railway . The route runs from Mikulášovice ( Nixdorf ) via Panský ( Herrnwalde ) to Rumburk ( Rumburg ).

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

Train ride at the Brtníky station (2014)

After the Bohemian Northern Railway opened the railway line from Rumburg via Schluckenau to Nixdorf in 1884 , the towns south of this line also requested their rail connection. In 1894, under the leadership of the industrialist Dr. Kindermann founded the North Bohemian Industrial Railway Consortium , which wanted to build the railway between Nixdorf, Zeidler , Herrnwalde and Rumburg with a branch to Schönlinde on its own.

The concession to build and operate a standard-gauge local train was granted by the Austrian state on August 3, 1901. Construction work on the new route had already started in June 1901, leading through the valley of the Nixdorf brook (Mikulášovický potok) over the watershed south of the Plissenberg (Plešný) into the valley of the Zeidlerbach (Brtnický potok) and north of the Wolfsberg into the upper Mandau valley changes. Larger engineering structures such as bridges and tunnels were not necessary on the new railway, only the ridge southwest of the Plissenberg made it necessary to make cuts. The siding of the Bohemian Northern Railway (BNB) , which has existed since 1869, was included between Ehrenberg and Rumburg . In October 1902 the construction work could be finished. The new railway line was officially opened with a pageant on October 28, 1902.

The operation was initially carried out by the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) on behalf of the owners. After the First World War in 1918, the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD took over this task. The first ČSD timetable from 1919 recorded three pairs of trains over the entire route. The travel time over the 18-kilometer route was about an hour.

On January 1, 1925, the North Bohemian Industrial Railway was nationalized and incorporated into the ČSD.

In the first year of operation, in the winter of 1903, operations had to be shut down for a week due to heavy snowfall. Something similar happened in 1927, 1955 and 1960.

After the Sudetenland was annexed to Germany in autumn 1938, the line came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Dresden . The connection was now included in the Reich course book as course book route 162e Nixdorf-Rumburg . The 1944 timetable contained a total of seven pairs of passenger trains on the entire route. Others ran on parts of the route, one also from and to Schönlinde. The journey time was between 41 and 46 minutes. At the end of the Second World War in May 1945, operations ceased.

After the end of the war, the route came to the re-established ČSD. Transport performance decreased to a minimum as a result of the expulsion of the German population. Many industrial companies were liquidated, so that the importance of the route also decreased in freight transport.

In 1997, there was a threat that rail operations would end for the first time. A takeover of the route by a private operator, which was planned at the time, did not materialize, however.

The 2006/2007 timetable recorded ten pairs of passenger trains on working days, which ran every two hours. Freight traffic no longer took place.

Since December 13, 2009, travel has been limited to weekends and public holidays, and trains no longer run on weekdays. Instead of rail traffic, the responsible Ústecký kraj set up a bus line that serves the same route if the journey takes ten minutes longer. In view of the tourist importance of the railway line, the affected communities and the administration of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park demanded that daily operations be resumed. From July 22nd to August 31st, 2010 the trains ran again on weekdays.

The timetable, which has been in effect since December 11, 2011, provides for seven pairs of trains on the weekends between Rumburk and Mikulášovice dolní n., Two of which also use the route that branches off in Pansky via Zahrady u Rumburka. In the Regiotakt Ústecký kraj line system , the line is run under the number U27.

In the spring of 2018, extensive work was carried out to renew the tracks and systems, for which the line has been completely closed since April 7, 2018. The bridge in the local area of Brtniky was also rebuilt, which at last could only be driven at 10 km / h. When installing the bridge, there was a serious accident on May 23, 2018, in which the railway crane overturned while driving to the construction site, including the bridge.

Vehicle use

Railcar of the ČD class 844 ("Regioshark") in Rumburk (2014)

In the first few years of operation, the local railway locomotives of the kkStB series 97 (ČSD 310.0) were used in front of mixed trains.

From May 1, 1932, the ČSD started using the tower railcars of the ČSD series M 120.4 in passenger transport . There is also evidence of the use of railcars of the ČSD series M 242.0 at the end of the 1930s.

After the Second World War, the now outdated tower cars were replaced by the new M 131.1 class . More recently, the class 810 railcars (ČSD class M 152.0), which were put into service from the end of the 1970s, as well as the class 814 ("Regionova") railcars reconstructed from these vehicles were used.

Between 2014 and 2017 inclusive, travel was carried out according to plan with the modern railcars of the ČD series 844 (“Regioshark”). Since 2018, České dráhy has only operated railcars of the ČD series 810 and ČD series 814 on the route .
