The Ult-Jagun – Korottschajewo railway line ( Russian Желе́зная доро́га Ульт-Ягун – Коротчаево ) is a single-track, 577 km long, non-electrified railway line in the northwest of the Asian part of Russia in the Russian gauge (1520 mm) .
course
The railway line begins in the village of Ult-Jagun (57 km from Surgut ) on a railway branch at km 753 of the southern Tomsk – Nizhnevartovsk railway line (which has a total length of 933 km).
The railway ends in Korottschajewo (in the immediate vicinity of Urengoy ) where it meets the Arctic Circle Railway .
The railway line described here and the Tomsk – Nizhnevartovsk railway line to the south run relatively precisely from south to north and thus connect the northern region of Western Siberia with the Trans-Siberian Railway and thus also the railway network of the European part of Russia.
The route passes through the area of the Yamalo-Nenets and the autonomous district of Khanty / Jugra .
Planning and construction
After huge deposits of oil and gas were discovered in northwest Siberia in the mid-1960s, it quickly became clear that the development of these new deposits would only be possible with the construction of new transport routes. From 1966 the Ministry of Transport of the USSR built a railway line - starting from Tyumen - to the north. This line to Surgut was completed by August 1975. Then the construction of the route described here began. On October 29, 1983, the first passenger train arrived at the Korottschajewo station. After that, regular passenger traffic was gradually opened until 1990.
The route leads through marshy terrain, which in itself meant difficult construction conditions. There were many rivers and streams that had to be crossed. Long winters with Siberian frosts also slowed the pace of construction. In addition, the route runs almost exclusively over permafrost , which increases the construction costs.
The idea of expanding the line to consist of two tracks has not yet been implemented. A higher speed and expanded transport capacities in the direction of the railway lines connecting to the north would be the advantages.
operator
The line was still regularly put into operation by the Soviet State Railways (СЖД). Today it is operated by the Sverdlovsk Railway , one of 16 independent railway branches or regional directorates of the Russian State Railways (RŽD). From the northern end of the line, i.e. from Korottschajewo, the Yamal Railway Company (a joint venture of the Autonomous Okrug, the RŽD branch of the Sverdlovsk Railway and the Sevtyument Transput) takes over operations to the west.
