Baikonur is a film from 2011 that was made in a German - Russian - Kazakh coproduction under the direction of Veit Helmer .

action

The orphan boy Iskander, who everyone calls " Gagarin " because of his enthusiasm for space travel , lives in a small Kazakh village near the Baikonur spaceport . He calculates the trajectory of the launching rockets by listening to radio messages. With his help, the inhabitants of the village live from salvaging the space debris that falls from the sky after the rocket launches. The young Nazira - also an orphan - is in love with Iskander and cannot reveal her feelings behind her spirited manner and down-to-earth way of life. One day Iskander finds the French space tourist Julie, who has lost her memory after a failed landing. According to a law of the steppe: "What falls from the sky, one can keep". And so Iskander keeps Julie as his bride. But his dizziness is soon discovered and she leaves him. Iskander then looks for work in Baikonur and will soon be trained there as a test pilot. There he meets Julie again, who is preparing for her next space flight. He sabotages her start and arranges a meeting with her in her free time. She forgives him, but tells him that her love is only for the stars. Iskander leaves Baikonur and returns to his village as a sheep farmer, where Nazira is waiting for him.

Reviews

The film received a mixed response in the press. On the one hand, the poetry, in which Helmer stages a kind of modern fairy tale, was praised. On the other hand, the arrest in classic clichés and the unreflective representation was criticized.

In its September 2011 edition, the film-dienst judged Baikonur : “The actors and amateur actors, all of whom appear very authentic, keep the magical realism of the story alive, which the soundtrack also picks up unobtrusively. You're only a little disappointed because Helmer doesn't let his cameraman indulge too often in those screen-filling tableaus that have made his films so distinctive so far. "

Trivia

  • For the first time a feature film was allowed to be shot in Baikonur under adventurous conditions.
