Bailey Wally's Diffie

Bailey Wallys Diffie (born June 27, 1902 in Detroit , USA , † January 12, 1983 in New York , USA) was an American historian focusing on Spanish and Portuguese history. He was recognized worldwide as one of the leading capacities for the Age of Discovery by Portugal . He was the most important Hispanist of his time in the United States and one of the most important worldwide in the 20th century.

Born to a small town attorney and raised on a farm, he was first introduced to Latin American and Iberian cultures and languages through two cousins ​​who lived in Honduras .

He first studied Hispanic Studies and History in Oklahoma and at Texas Christian University . During his student days he traveled to Europe as he worked as a sailor from time to time. In 1927 he came to Spain and France , where he stayed until 1930 and wrote his doctorate at the University of Madrid. During this time he researched the occupation of the Iberian Peninsula by Napoleonic troops. And there he got to know his wife, like an American, whom he married there too.

After his return to the United States in 1930, he became a lecturer at New York City College University ; he held this office until 1968. He had guest lectureships at Yale and Columbia University, among others . He later also worked on the Voice of America radio programs for the Latin America section .

Diffie's work encompasses the exploration of Portuguese and Brazilian history with an emphasis on the Age of Discovery and Portugal's imperial period. In this area he was one of the most sought-after nestors of Romance philology worldwide ; so he researched the development of Portugal from an agrarian state to an empire and thus created standard works.

Diffie's work has also been translated into Portuguese . The New York City College announces the "Bailey W. Diffie Award".
