The Bakelite Museum Kierspe is a museum on the subject of Bakelite in the old office building of Kierspe . Bakelite was invented by Leo Hendrik Baekeland in 1905 and was the first industrial plastic . The Heimatverein opened the museum in 2003 to show products made from Bakelite as it was processed in the Kierspe area. Many of the exhibits come from the 5000-piece collection of the producer Carl-Heinz Vollmann, owner of the Reppel & Vollmann company.
