history
Baker was built along the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad on a lake that supplied the steam locomotives with water. This lake is now called Lake Baker and is largely enclosed by the city. For a short time the place was called Lorraine before it was renamed in honor of the engineer AG Baker. Numerous settlers could be lured into the area around Baker, whereby the population increased and a large community of dry field farmers was created. After oil and natural gas were found near Baker in 1912 , the city experienced another increase in population. By 1920, Baker had more than 1,000 residents, and that number grew to over 2,500 by 1970. Although there are still numerous gas sources in the surrounding area, the population has since declined again.
