Balazar (also Balasar ) is a place and a municipality in northern Portugal .

Alexandrina Maria da Costa , beatified in 2004 , was born here in 1904 and died here in 1955. Her house is an internationally known attraction for visitors.

In the royal surveys of 1220, Balasar is listed as Sancta Eolália de Balazar . The current municipality was not created until 1442, when the two municipalities Gresufes and Casal were merged. It was named after the smallest place in the new community, Balazar.

Until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , Balazar belonged to the district of Barcelos , to be assigned to Póvoa de Varzim since 1836 (from 1853 to 1855 to Vila Nova de Famalicão ).

The birthplace of the beatified Alexandrina Maria da Costa ( Casa da Beata Alexandrina ) attracts visitors from all over the world. It is a listed building.

Other monuments in the municipality are the parish church of Santa Eulália of Balazar , the chapel Capela Santa Cruz , and the manor house Quinta da Covilhã . The rococo mansion Solar dos Carneiro da Grã-Magriço should also be mentioned, which is also known as Casa da Quinta de Dona Benta .
