Balch Springs is a city in Dallas County in the US state of Texas in the United States and is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex .

geography

The city is located on the Hickory Creek and Trinity River in northeast Texas, is about 130 km to the north from Oklahoma and has a total area of ​​20.9 km², of which 0.3 km² is water. Interstate 20 and 635 run through the city, which briefly run together here and divide the city into two halves of almost the same size. In the east there is a connection to the north-south US Highway 175 . The distance to Dallas in the west is about 20 km, which means that the city can also be described as a suburb of Dallas.

The town's origins date back to 1870 when the family settled in the area, where there were three springs, one of which never dried up. Soon after other settlers came here, this third spring was the place where they also got their drinking water and became a meeting place where people could exchange news with each other. The name of the city was derived from the family name Balch and Springs: Balch Springs.

In 1900 there was a cemetery here for the surrounding farms. The first school building was erected a few years later. It was connected to the electricity supply in 1939 by the Texas Power and Light and shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War , the place was also connected to the gas supply and the telephone network by the Lone Star Gas and Telephone .

In 1956 the place had 3500 inhabitants, grew steadily in the following decades and in 1976 there were already 13,050 inhabitants. In 1958 the fire brigade was modernized with 3 new fire engines and in September 1964 the first post office was opened and in 1965 the first community taxes were raised. In 1991 the city u. a. 2 banks, a weekly local newspaper, a library and several churches. Its proximity to Dallas has made it a popular place to live.

Demographic data

According to the 2000 census, 19,375 people lived here in 6,175 households and 4,828 families. The population density was 928.1 inhabitants per km ². The racial population is composed of 62.90% White, 18.52% African American, 0.98% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 14.05% other ethnic groups. About 2.89% are descended from two or more races, and 25.72% of the population are Spanish or Latin American.

Of the 6,175 households, 46.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.8% of them were married couples living together. 20.5% were single mothers and 21.8% were non-families. 16.7% of all households were single households and there were people living in 3.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.13 and the average family size was 3.49.

34.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 10.7% 18 to 24, 32.2% 25 to 44, 17.2% 45 to 64, and 5.8% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 96.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 92.5 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 37,087 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,750. Males had a median income of $ 29,256 versus $ 26,611 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,476. 12.2% of the population and 10.7% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 13.2% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.5% were 65 or older.
