The Ballhof Fountain in Hanover is a fountain system installed as art in public space on Ballhofplatz in Hanover's old town .

History and description

The fountain was designed in 1975 by the Munich-based artist Helmut Otto Schön with three hollow spheres made of copper and tombac . He dedicated the work to the composer Carl Orff on his eightieth birthday.

The water, which is pumped up from a deep stone basin through an umbel-like supporting structure, flows down and causes the balls to rotate due to its gravity. Seating made of simple concrete was installed on the sides of the “Aquamobile” to invite passers-by to linger.

The Ballhof Fountain has already served as an artistic motif on a silver medal .
