Balta is one of the Shetland Islands in Scotland , 0.8 km² large, uninhabited island. It is east of the island of Unst and the Balta Sound.
The remains of a prehistoric stone tower (a so-called brochure ) and a Viking Age chapel can be found on the island . In 1895 a lighthouse was built on the southern tip of the island, which was demolished in 2003 in favor of a solar-powered system.
