Baltfried Barthel

Baltfried Barthel (born December 4, 1915 in Würzburg ; † September 10, 2013 in Kaiserslautern ) was a German SPD politician .

Life

Barthel attended elementary and high school, the humanistic grammar school and the teacher training college. In 1936 he successfully passed his teaching examination for elementary school. After the war he taught at the elementary school in Kottweiler-Schwanden , but also took part in the reconstruction of the adult education center in Kaiserslautern. In 1946 he took over its management and was also a member of the board of the German Adult Education Association , which he also helped found.

Barthel was elected to the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament for the first time in 1959 and was a member of it until 1967. In the state parliament he was a member of the committee for culture and the SPD parliamentary group executive.

In 1964 Barthel was elected honorary mayor and alderman of the city of Kaiserslautern, in 1967 he took over the post full-time and in the course of it resigned from his state parliament mandate. In 1973 he was finally appointed first mayor and as a department head was now responsible for schools, culture, public utilities and municipal drainage. In the mid-1970s, an internal party dispute broke out in the Kaiserslautern SPD between Barthel and Lord Mayor Hans Jung , which caused a nationwide sensation. Barthel held the post of first mayor as deputy mayor until 1980.

During his tenure as alderman and mayor, Barthel rendered outstanding services to the Kaiserslautern school landscape. For example, he campaigned for the establishment of the two school centers North and South, in the course of which the first integrated comprehensive school in Rhineland-Palatinate , the Bertha von Suttner comprehensive school , was established.

Furthermore, from 1965 to 1974 he was a member of the school and culture committee of the Rhineland-Palatinate City Association and from 1970 chairman of the working group of Rhineland-Palatinate theaters and orchestras.
