Balthasar Scheidt

Balthasar Scheidt (also Scheid ; * December 21, 1614 in Strasbourg ; † November 26, 1670 ibid) was a German Hebrew , Evangelical Lutheran theologian and university professor .

Life

Scheidt's early training is unknown. In 1630 he had to give up his recently started studies, because after the death of his parents he had to run their business . In 1635 he resumed studying theology at the University of Strasbourg under Johann Conrad Dannhauer's guidance . In 1637 he moved to the University of Königsberg , where he developed a close relationship with Abraham Calov . After a long journey he returned to Strasbourg in 1644, where he obtained a licentiate in theology. He was then responsible for studying for a Count of Nassau , and in 1647 he completed his habilitation at the Philosophical Faculty of Strasbourg University.

Scheidt received the professorship of Hebrew at the university in 1649 . A year later he became the doctor of theology doctorate . Another year later, in 1651, he also received the professorship in Greek. In the same year he was also a canon at the St. Thomas Church in the city. He died in his third term as rector of Strasbourg University.
