Balthasar Walther , also Balthasar Gualtherus , (born May 1, 1586 in Allendorf ; † November 15, 1640 in Braunschweig ) was a German philologist and Lutheran theologian.

Life

Balthasar was born on as the son of the Allendorf pastor Johann Walther († October 5, 1597 in Allendorf) and his wife Margaretha Heider († October 5, 1597 in Allendorf), who was married in 1574, and daughter of the pastor in Blankenburg Leonhard Heider. He was baptized on May 2, 1586. He attended the elementary school in his birthplace. At the age of eleven he lost both parents. His legal guardians sent him to the school in Frankenhausen in 1600 and from 1602 he attended the school in Neustadt an der Orla . On September 3, 1603, he moved to the Gymnasium Illustre in Gotha , which was under the direction of Rector Andreas Wilke (1562–1631).

On February 3, 1606, he began to study the philosophical and theological sciences at the University of Jena and on August 5, 1606 acquired the academic degree of Magister with the grade cum laude . He continued his studies in 1607 at the newly founded University of Gießen , where Balthasar Mentzer the Elder , Johannes Winckelmann and Christoph Helwig became his teachers. From 1608 he studied again in Jena.

In 1610 he intended to move to the University of Wittenberg. However, in the same year he received the offer to take over the professorship in the Greek language, which he took up on October 6th. In addition, he received the professorship of the Hebrew language on April 6, 1612, became dean of the philosophical faculty and was rector of the alma mater in the summer semester of 1615 . In 1621, after completing a trial sermon, he received an offer as superintendent in Gotha , for which he was ordained in Jena on July 29, 1621 and took up his church office on August 1 of that year. After holding trial sermons in Braunschweig on April 24 and 16, 1636, he was given the position of Superintendent of Braunschweig. When he and his family arrived there on July 10th that year, a week later, on July 17th, he gave his inaugural sermon there. However, he did not work long in Braunschweig. He died after suffering two strokes. On November 20, 1640, his body was buried in the St. Martinikirche in Braunschweig , where an epitaph was erected for him, which also shows his portrait.
