The Bamberg Psalter is an illuminated manuscript from around 1230/1240, which is now kept in the Bamberg State Library . It was intended for the private devotion of a person of high standing. The localization is controversial. In the past, a workshop in Bamberg was often accepted, more recently an origin from Regensburg .

content

The text of the 150 psalms has a rich set of uniform features. Eight full-page initials structure the text. 15 full-page miniatures with scenes from the life and passion of Christ as well as a depiction of the Last Judgment are arranged in groups of five in front of the 1st, 51st and 101st Psalm.

The contemporary horn plate binding is also remarkable . Among those with silver -mounted transparent horn plates on front and back cover are opaque color paintings on parchment visible: On the front cover Christ in the Mandorla . Four medallions with the symbols of the evangelists border the mandorla in the shape of a cross . In the upper corners two cherubim , in the lower two archangels : Michael with the dragon and Gabriel with the lily scepter and vessel. On the back cover Maria with child in the mandorla. Four medallions with female nimbed figures (four cardinal virtues ) border the mandorla in the shape of a cross . In the upper corners Aaron with a blooming staff and Isaiah with the rice, in the lower Ezekiel in front of a locked tower gate and Solomon pointing to a spring .
