Church treasure (material goods)
A church treasurer is the ensemble of historic art treasures of a church , usually a monastery - ( monastery treasure ) and Abbey - ( Abbey treasure ) or Collegiate Church ( pin treasure ) or a cathedral ( Cathedral Treasure ), mostly in churches associated treasuries or diocesan museums kept and exhibited become. Historically, the treasure of a church was the treasure hidden in it in the form of the largest possible collection of relics , which could also be hidden in altar graves or in these inaccessible treasuries, invisible to the believer. The term Münsterschatz can be used synonymously .
Because of the tendency of sacred and secular donors for representation many churches came over the centuries to holdings of precious and equipped with illuminations decorated Bibles, gospel books and other liturgical writings as missals , liturgical vestments , vessels , reliquaries , statues of saints and paintings. In spite of iconoclasms , secularizations , sales due to financial difficulties and other losses, much of it has been preserved or bought back. The preparation of these treasures in museums did not usually begin until the 20th century.
