The Banat globe thistle ( Echinops bannaticus ) is a plant from the family of the daisy family (Asteraceae).

features

The Banat spherical thistle is a perennial , herbaceous plant that may develop a pleio shape and reach heights of 50 to 120 centimeters. The leaves are pinnate, their sections have 1 to 2 lobes on both sides. The upper side of the leaf is scattered glandular and loosely cobweby. The shell of the individual heads is 14 to 20 millimeters long. The outer bracts are spatulate and blunt. The middle ones are lanceolate and have a straight, short tip. The stem is one to few heads. The collecting heads have a diameter of 2.5 to 4 (rarely up to 6) centimeters. The crown is gray-blue.

The flowering period extends from July to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30 or 32.

distribution

The Banat ball thistle occurs on the Balkan Peninsula, in Romania and Bulgaria. In Great Britain and Germany it is a neophyte. It grows on the edge of the forest and roads in the hill step. In Central Europe the species occurs temporarily feral in rubble weed communities.
