Bank Rossiya

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rossiya Bank ( Russian Акционерный коммерческий банк Россия, АКБ Россия ) is a Russian bank , which was founded on June 27, 1990th The company's headquarters are in Saint Petersburg . Bank Rossija was one of the first Russian private banks after the political change.

Business activity

The bank was founded in 1990 through an initiative of the Committee of the CPSU of Leningrad Oblast with party money as initial capital. However, during the time of upheaval at the time, the bank was bobbing about and was facing collapse just one year later, in December 1991. Yuri Kovalchuk then took over the bank with a few friends by obtaining a small loan from a local shoe manufacturer and thus buying up the bankrupt company. The other three partners were the physicists Viktor Myachin , Andrej Fursenko and Vladimir Jakunin , who, like Kovalchuk, had originally all been employed at the Leningrad Physics-Technical Institute Joffe . Five years later, in November 1996, together with Vladimir Smirnov , Nikolai Shamalov and Vladimir Putin, Kowaltschuk, Mjachin, Jakunin and Andrei Fursenko and his brother Sergei founded the dacha cooperative "Osero" (lake) in the village of Solovievka on the east bank of a lake the Karelian Isthmus north of Saint Petersburg.

In the 1990s, the bank's business activities were mainly concentrated in the Saint Petersburg area. However, that slowly changed when Vladimir Putin became President of Russia in late 1999. In 2004, through the mediation of Alexei Mordashov, Bank Rossija bought the insurance company Sogaz from Gazprom . At the end of 2004, Nikolai Shamalov became a shareholder in Bank Rossija. His son Yuri Shamalov became president of the Gazfond pension fund at the end of 2005 .

In August 2006, the insurance group Sogaz, which has belonged to Bank Rossija since 2004, bought 75% + 1 share in the management company "Lider", which managed the Gazfond pension fund . This gave Bank Rossiya control of Gazfond. Through Gazfond, in turn, it gained control of Gazprombank , whose main shareholder was Gazfond.

Finally, a subsidiary of Gazprombank is Gazprom-Media Holding, which was sold by Gazprom to Gazprombank in July 2005 for $ 166 million. At the time, this included the government-affiliated newspaper Izvestia , the television stations NTW and TNT and the radio station Echo Moskwy (66 percent share).

In May 2008, Gazprom-Media sold its Izvestia stake in the Sogaz insurance group belonging to Bank Rossija. The Izvestia was then transferred to the newly founded by Kovalchuk and also belongs to the Rossiya Bank National Media Group incorporated (NMG). In addition to Izvestia , NMG also owns the private television broadcaster Ren-TV, which used to be critical of the government (stake of 68 percent), the broadcaster " Petersburg-Fünfter Kanal " and a 25% minority stake in First Channel . Alina Kabajewa has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors since September 2014 .

Sanctions

Although the bank is only of medium size, it plays a crucial role in financing the inner circle of power around Russian President Vladimir Putin , and has therefore become an object of Western sanctions. For example, in the course of the 2014 Crimean crisis , the US government frozen the US assets of the Rossiya Bank on March 20, 2014. According to the US government, Rossiya Bank is number 17 among the largest banks in Russia. She has assets of around $ 10 billion and accounts with banking institutions in the US and Europe.

  • 1999 to 2004: Viktor Myachin
